The author examines the rise of Abu Sayaff from an Islamic preacher to the leader of a group of terrorists against the backdrop a 300-year-old tradition of armed Muslim opposition to the Philippine state. He (the author) looks at the "Muslim problem" or "Moro or Mindanao secessionist problem", succession of violent acts against Christian targets in Zamboanga City since 1992 and the basic aim of Abu Sayaff to establish an independent Islamic state in Mindanao.
