Content: Originally published in 1953, Four Symposia on Folklore is a printed collection of transcribed tape recordings from the 1950 Midcentury International Folklore Conference at Indiana University. The collection is perhaps best described in the following excerpt from a 1954 review originally written by Richard M. Dorson for the Midwest Folklore journal: "Henceforth the loneliest folklorist starved for shoptalk can find congenial company at his elbow. ... This enthralling volume offers information into important work being carried on in centers of interest from Sweden to Arizona, provides rich insights ... and furnishes valuable suggestions for future lines of folkloristic endeavor. These data and ideas reach the reader ... in a medium most ideally suited to the folklorist's craft, the spontaneous spoken word, seized on tape and transported to the printed page. As an heroic attempt to pool information and focus the scattered energies of folklore enthusiasts in this country ... the Four Symposia constitutes a landmark in the history of American folklore studies."

Content: This study traces the importance of Italy as a source of literary inspiration in the work of the Swabian poet Wilhelm Waiblinger (1804-1830), who spent the last four years of his life, the most prolific of his career, living and traveling in Italy. Drawing on Waiblinger's poems, travel accounts, letters and diaries, Thompson compiles and analyzes Waiblinger's thoughts on and engagement with Italian art, literature, music, people and landscapes as well as the themes of antiquity, Renaissance, and Catholicism

Content: "Everyone who is interested in child psychology--parents, teachers, and other youth counselors--has been perplexed at one time or another by what appear to be capricious variations in children's behavior. The present book was written to disseminate more widely what is now known about child growth and behavior. It was especially designed for the serious student who generally prefers an integrated interpretation of the research literature. Since psychological generalizations and theories are seldom simple, considerable effort has been expended to help the student over the rough spots. The literary style is simple and straightforward; theoretical terms are introduced only when needed and then with explicit definitions; the discussion includes numerous examples drawn from common observation. The contents of this volume should be understandable to the average college freshman--with occasional assistance from the instructor. Although this book was explicitly written for undergraduate students in colleges and universities, some instructors may also find it a fruitful point of departure for introducing graduate students in psychology and education to the research literature on children's psychological growth. Approximately one thousand research and theoretical references are cited to support the general discussion. Although these references by no means exhaust the relevant literature, they do include a large proportion of the more adequately conducted studies in the field"--Preface.
