    Abstract: The principle of connecting rod (con-rod) fracture splitting was analyzed, and the microscopic morphology of fracture surface was observed using scanning electron microscope. Crack initiation and propagation during the fracture splitting of con-rod process was numerically simulated. The effects of the bolt hole on the fracture splitting force and distribution of stress and strain were investigated. Typical location of fracture splitting defects and why they were generated were analyzed, and methods were proposed to avoid them. The results show that the nature of con-rod fracture splitting is a mode I quasi-brittle fracture, and the position of crack initiation can be found during the analysis process. Existence of the bolt hole is helpful to optimize fracture splitting technology and improve product quality, and the optimized range of bolt hole position was achieved based on simulation result. Moreover, defects such as steps, break-outs, usually occur between the bolt hole wall and outer edge of the con-rod big end in that two cracks converged and propagation velocity was slow in this region. The fracture splitting defects can be reduced or avoided when the outer shape of the fracture surface is a circular arc.

    Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of astaxanthin and its possible mechanisms on acute cerebral infarction (ACI) in rat model. Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham group, model group, and astaxanthin-treated groups (20, 40, and 80 mg/kg). Neurological examination, the ratio of cerebral edema, and histopathology changes were assessed. Moreover, some oxidative stress markers were obtained for biochemical analysis, and the expression of neurotrophic factors gene was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. The results showed that treatment with astaxanthin notably reduced neurological deficit scores and the ratio of cerebral edema compared with the model group. Meanwhile, astaxanthin increased the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathioneperoxidase as well as decreased the content of malondialdehyde in brain tissue. RT-PCR results showed that the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) mRNA were increased with astaxanthin treatment. The results indicated that astaxanthin could ameliorate ACI followed by suppressing oxidative stress and upregulating the expression of BDNF and NGF mRNA.

    Abstract: The present study examined the factor structure and measurement invariance of the shortened versions of the Inventory of Callous–Unemotional Traits (ICU) with data from multiple informants. Five short versions of the ICU proposed in previous studies were tested and compared through confirmatory factor analysis. The measurement invariance across different informants (i.e., self-report, parent-report, and teacher-report) and longitudinal measurement invariance for the resulting best-fitting model were tested thoroughly. Results indicated that a shortened form that consists of 11 items (ICU-11) to assess callousness and uncaring factors had excellent overall fit. Moreover, the ICU-11 was invariant across informant and occasions. However, the ICU-11 was not without limitations; the internal consistency α for the uncaring factor with self-report scores was marginal. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the ICU-11 was an excellent fit for our data and displayed measurement invariance across informants and over time. The ICU-11 may be a promising assessment tool that could be used in research to assess callous–uncaring traits in Chinese children.

    Abstract: The primary objective of the Peritoneal Dialysis Telemedicine-assisted Platform Cohort (PDTAP) Study is to explore potential predictors and their effects on patient survival, technique survival, and the occurrence of infectious and noninfectious complications. Design: The PDTAP study is a national-level cohort study in China. A newly developed PD telemedicine application provided a unique and convenient way to collect multicenter, structured data across units. Setting: The PDTAP study was underway in 27 hospitals from 14 provinces located at 7 geographical regions (northwest, northeast, north, central, southwest, southeast, and south) in China. Participants: Our study aims to enroll at least 7000 adult patients with end-stage renal disease receiving PD. Methods: Approval has been obtained through the ethics committees of all hospitals. All participants signed the informed consent form after the center had received ethics board approval in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Main outcome measures: Patient survival, technique survival, hospitalization, and the occurrence of infectious and noninfectious complications. Conclusions: The PDTAP study aims to explore potential predictors and their effects on patient survival, technique survival, and infectious and noninfectious complications using a newly developed PD telemedicine system to collect multicenter, structured data in real-world practice. Substantial and transformable findings in relation to PD practices were expected. This study also developed a national-level infrastructure for further collaboration and ancillary investigation.

    Abstract: More than 150 cases of Fanconi syndrome (FS) or hypophosphatemia osteomalacia induced by low-dose adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) have been reported since 2002, when ADV was introduced for the long-term treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Because the life expectancy of HBV-infected individuals has increased, the adverse effects of long-term treatment with antiviral therapies are increasingly observed, and nephrotoxicity is one of the most severe adverse effects of ADV. Therefore, the number of cases may be far higher than reported. Moreover, ADV-induced FS is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed long after it first develops. ADV-induced FS may seriously decrease patient quality of life and lead to bone fractures and even disability. Although progress has been made in the identification of biomarkers and treatments, few systematic clinical guidelines or clinical reviews for FS induced by ADV have been reported. In this study, we highlighted the recent progress toward understanding of FS induced by ADV, described a clinical case, and summarized the primary characteristics and laboratory findings of this disease.

    Abstract: Driving characteristics of human drivers, such as driving safety, comfort, handiness, and efficiency, which are interrelated and contradictory, are synthetically considered to maintain a safe inter-vehicle distance in this article. For the multi-objective coordination control problem, the safety, handiness, comfort, and efficiency indicators are established via driving states and manipulated variable. Furthermore, a multi-performance indicator coordination mechanism is proposed via the invariant set and quadratic boundedness theory. A headway control algorithm for adaptive cruise control is established under the dynamic output feedback control framework. Finally, feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are verified via closed-loop simulations under the following, cut-out, and cut-in typical operating conditions.

    Abstract: We improve the typical GM car-following model. In order to describe the impacts of the lateral offset between the vehicles in car-following state, this paper proposes time distance to measure the drivers' attention of driving environment and uses generalized expectation headway to describe the ideal driving state of the driver. Take the difference between the actual and expected headway as the important standard for driver to decide whether to speed up or slow down. Then take the drivers' attentions and the expected headway as the decision-making factors, and consider them while revising the GM car-following model. The numerical simulation shows the improved GM model conforms to the general driving behavior, enhances the function of the typical model, and strengthens the model stability.

    Abstract: Using a modified dot-probe task, the present research examined the time-course of attentional bias for culture-related cues in Mongolian-Chinese bilinguals. Design/methodology/approach: Using a mixed experimental design, children with different language fluency (fluent bilingual, limited bilingual and mandarin monolingual) were recruited ( N = 168; 51% boys; M age = 9.88 years, SD = 0.38 years; 59% Mongolian) to complete a dot-probe task in which they were shown pairs of pictures representing Mongolian and Han culture for short (60 ms) and long (500 ms) exposure durations. The difference between fluent and limited bilinguals lies in their proficiency in Mongolian. Data and analysis: The attentional bias scores ( d) were entered into a 2 × 3 mixed design repeated-measures analysis of variance with language fluency (fluent bilingual versus limited bilingual versus monolingual) as a between-subjects variable and the time-course (60 versus 500 ms) as a within-subject variable. Findings/conclusions: In the task, compared with pictures representing Han culture, all students showed preferential attention to pictures conveying Mongolian culture across presentation durations. However, for 60 ms, fluent bilinguals showed a smaller attentional bias than did monolinguals, with no difference between limited bilinguals and monolinguals; there was no significant difference among the three groups at 500 ms. Originality: Relatively less research has been performed on comparative analysis between fluent and non-fluent bilinguals, and most of the culture-related content is measured by subjective methods. This study attempts to directly compare these two bilinguals’ attentional bias for culture-related cues using a dot-probe task. Significance/implications: The results of comparative analysis showed that fluent bilinguals were more familiar with Mongolian language and preserved their ethnic culture better, which may indicate a close relationship between language and culture.

    Abstract: We present a novel pedestrian count estimation approach based on global image descriptors formed from multi-scale texture features that considers spatial distribution. For regions of interest, local texture features are represented based on histograms of multi-scale block local binary pattern, which jointly constitute the feature vector of the whole image. Therefore, to achieve an effective estimation of pedestrian count, principal component analysis is used to reduce the dimension of the global representation features, and a fitting model between image global features and pedestrian count is constructed via support vector regression. The experimental result shows that the proposed method exhibits high accuracy on pedestrian count estimation and can be applied well in the real world.
