Content: This collection of five documents and a culture summary, all in English, cover historical and cultural information from about late-1880s to early 2000s. Two documents date back to the first quarters of the 20th century when most of the area was ruled by European colonialists. One is a chapter from a handbook compiled by the intelligence division of the British Navy, the other is a book written by H. R. P. Dickson, a British political agent who worked in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq in 1920s-1930s. Dickson's book provides a first hand account of Bedouin culture and society including the physical environment, material culture, seasonal movements, organization of tribes and lineages, cultural norms relating to visiting and hospitality, folklore, religious beliefs and practices, warfare, and inter-community relations. The remainder of the collection consists of three articles, all by professional anthropologists. Two discuss indigenous conflict resolution practices with particular emphasis on blood feuds and cattle raiding. The remaining article explores the effects of a wide variety of external and internal factors, notably colonialism, commercialization of pastoral production, occupational change and sedentarization, on Bedouin culture and identity. The Bedouin are Arabic-speaking people who earn their living primarily from animal husbandry by natural graze and browse of sheep, goats, and camels. Traditionally, the Bedouin lived in tents, formed scattered camping units that seasonally migrated over a vast area of the Middle East and North Africa influenced by availability of pasture and water. This way of life and social organization has been significantly affected by the creation of nation-states in the 20th century and the establishment national boundaries across customary migration routes. As a consequence, the Bedouin have begun to engage in new activities including tourism, commerce and wage labor

Content: Undertaking qualitative research on sensitive topics often raises a variety of ethical problems. Based on empirical research, this book documents experiences throughout the entire research process: from conceptualization, ethics approval, fieldwork, to analysis and publication. It presents readers with stories from the researcher's perspective and synthesizes these experiences into a conceptual framework that will assist researchers to undertake qualitative research. Each section discusses potential pitfalls, provides quotes and stories and reviews the relevant literature and theory, providing readers with a description of the process of conducting sensitive research from the perspective of those actually doing the research. This is not a methodology textbook, rather, it discusses the issues faced by researchers during the conduct of qualitative research on sensitive topics, such as death and dying, sexuality, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, cancer. It provides practical recommendations for researchers and Research Ethics Committees. It will also be a useful resource for anyone interested in undertaking a research project on sensitive topics and for those teaching qualitative methods across a broad range of disciplines.

Content: In Wealth into Power, Bruce Dickson challenges the notion that economic development is leading to political change in China, or that China's private entrepreneurs are helping to promote democratization. Instead, they have become partners with the ruling Chinese Communist Party to promote economic growth while maintaining the political status quo. Dickson's research illuminates the Communist Party's strategy for incorporating China's capitalists into the political system and how the shared interests, personal ties, and common views of the party and the private sector are creating a form of 'crony communism'. Rather than being potential agents of change, China's entrepreneurs may prove to be a key source of support for the party's agenda. Based on years of research and original survey data, this book will be of interest to all those interested in China's political future and in the relationship between economic wealth and political power.
Note: Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015). , Introduction -- The Party's promotion of the private sector -- Co-opting the capitalists -- Bridges and branches : the CCP's institutional links to the private sector -- Views on the economic, political, and social environments -- Private entrepreneurs in public service : participation in China's formal political institutions -- The ripple effects of privatization : corruption, inequality, and charity -- Conclusion.

Content: Assembled on the occasion of Gary Dickson's retirement from the University of Edinburgh following a distinguished career as an internationally acclaimed scholar of medieval social and religious history, this volume contains contributions by both established and newer scholars inspired by Dickson’s particular interests in medieval popular religion, including ‘religious enthusiasm’. Together, the essays comprise a comprehensive and rich investigation of the idea of sanctity and its many medieval manifestations across time (fifth through fifteenth centuries) and in different geographical locations (England, Scotland, France, Italy, the Low Countries). By approaching the theme of sanctity from multiple disciplinary perspectives, this highly original collection pushes forward current academic thinking about medieval hagiography, iconography, social history, women's studies, and architectural history
Note: Most papers originally presented at a 3-day conference held July 2004 at the University of Edinburgh, to mark Gary Dickson's retirement from its Department of History , Includes bibliographical references and index
