Since the Second World War, both the USA and the USSR have had military forces and weaponry deployed in the Asia-Pacific region. While in the past, the scaling down of one superpower's military presence often led to the other filling in the vacuum, since the late 1980s, a new feature has been introduced in that both superpowers, without formal military agreement have undertaken military withdrawals from this region. In view of this novel development, the paper aims at analysing the causes and consequences of reduced Soviet military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In the main, it is the paper's intent to invoke caution against euphoric a reading of Soviet military reductions. (DÜI-Sen)
