Unmittelbar neben dem kleinen Ort Ebensee im idyllischen oberösterreichischen Salzkammergut wurde 1943 von der SS ein Konzentrationslager mit über 18000 Häftlingen eingerichtet. Durch Zwangsarbeit sollte der von der Nazipropaganda genährte Mythos der "Wunderwaffe" in die Realität umgesetzt werden. die Häftlinge des "SS-Arbeitslagers Zement" mußten in kürzester Zeit riesige unterirdische Stollen in den Berg treiben, in denen das Raketenforschungszentrum Peenemünde, geschützt vor Luftangriffen, untergebracht werden sollte. Die Häftlinge, ständig gehetzt und unter Lebensgefahr, wußten kaum etwas von den Raketenplänen der Nazis. Sie litten unter furchtbaren Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen. Die Lage im KZ wurde vollends katastrophal, als im Frühjahr 1945 Häftlingstransporte aus den vor den sowjetischen Truppen evakuierten Konzentrationslagern eintrafen. Der Hunger forderte Tausende Opfer. Als sich die amerikanischen Truppen dem Lager näherten, gelang es einer Widerstandsgruppe unter dramatischen Umständen, die geplante Vernichtung aller Häftlinge in den Stollen zu verhindern. (AUT)
