Content: Biographisches: " Kiersten White is the New York Times bestselling, Bram Stoker Award-winning, and critically acclaimed author of many books, including The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein , the And I Darken trilogy, the Slayer series, and the Camelot Rising trilogy. Hide is her adult debut. White lives with her family in San Diego, where they obsessively care for their deeply ambivalent tortoise, Kimberly." Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from January 17, 2022 Bram Stoker Award–winning YA author White ( Camelot Rising ) makes her adult debut with an enthralling, high-energy thriller grounded in supernatural horror. Fourteen contestants are dropped off in an abandoned amusement park for a weeklong game of extreme hide-and-seek with a massive cash prize. Among them is Mackenzie “Mack” Black, recruited through the homeless shelter where she’s been staying. Mack is skilled at making herself invisible, having survived her father’s massacre of her family by hiding. But as players develop alliances and rivalries, it becomes clear to some that there’s more than money at stake, while others uncover the horrors lurking in the park. White’s depictions of players other than Mack begin in stereotype, but she gradually reveals enough emotional depth in each that, by the time they become a team determined to survive, the reader is ready to cheer them on in both their escape and their satisfying revenge against those who would treat them as disposable. White skillfully balances the terrifying solo experiences of individual characters, the tense group dynamics, and the park’s backstory to create a constantly shifting narrative backed by a growing sense of dread. With this exhilarating outing, White proves she has a finger on the pulse of millennial horror." Rezension(3): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: April 1, 2022 Transitioning from YA fiction following the conclusion of her Camelot Rising trilogy (starting with The Guinevere Deception, 2019), White makes her adult debut with a contemporary thriller centered around a classic Greek myth, with just a touch of reality-show flair. Fourteen people desperate to make a fresh start have more in common than they know. That connection makes them prime candidates for the contest for which they have been selected: a competition based on a children's game, set in an isolated, long-forgotten amusement park, with a fabulous monetary prize for the winner. All they have to do is stay hidden from a mysterious seeker for a week. The shifting viewpoints of contestants and event organizers open a window to background and motivation and offer insight into the purpose behind the game while building tension as each contender is eliminated. The suspenseful plot combines elements of Thomas Tryon's classic Harvest Home, Netflix's Squid Games, and the social commentary of Jordan Peele's film oeuvre and mixes these with a revelatory pacing reminiscent of Spielberg's Jaws. Horror enthusiasts will devour this devilishly clever story. COPYRIGHT(2022) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(4): "〈a href=http://lj.libraryjournal.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/libraryjournal_logo.png alt=Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: April 1, 2022 When Mack receives an invitation to participate in a hide-and-seek competition with a $50,000 prize, she's living in a homeless shelter and still wracked with guilt over surviving her family's murders years earlier. She and 13 other young people are taken to an abandoned amusement park, where they're told they must hide during daylight hours and that the first two members of their group to be found every day will be out of the competition. The competitors include a wannabe influencer, a young man banished from his religious sect, a lesbian veteran, an underemployed striver, and a kindly gas station attendant. They soon realize that whatever is seeking them in the park is not human. White's ( The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein ) adult debut still feels fundamentally like a YA novel. The prose is simplistic, and though the characters are out of their teens, most of them are emotionally stunted from trauma and seem younger (one has her first kiss ever during the competition). The idea that generational wealth requires violence to sustain it is delivered with an anvil, while the horror elements are underbaked, there are very few actual scares to be found. VERDICT This mashup of The Breakfast Club and The Hunger Games may appeal to young teens, but it's not recommended for adult horror readers. --Stephanie KloseCopyright 2022 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. Guinevere is a mystery: an impostor princess, daughter of Merlin, and possessor of magical knowledge, she has been sent to Camelot to pose as queen and keep Arthur safe. White (Slayer, 2019, etc.) sets up an ambitious take on Arthurian lore, with many details familiar yet altered--Lancelot is a woman, Mordred is Arthur's right hand and also very appealing, and Guinevere intends only good, although it seems as if this incarnation may still bring ruin, in this case merely by being magical in a world that has banished magic. The connective tissue of the power women wield despite being overlooked doesn't always hold together, but the questions Guinevere asks about women and power, and the subtext that chaos is inherently feminine (the defeated Dark Queen, Guinevere, the Lady of the Lake) while Arthur represents masculinity and control, are intriguing--although this volume comes to no conclusions. More diverse than many Camelot representations (Sir Bors has a physical disability, Sir Tristan has brown skin in otherwise white Camelot, and there is a pair of lesbian lovers), this is a retelling designed for a modern audience more interested in people than battles and more intrigued by identity and affection than honor and questing. A promising series opener. (Fantasy. 12-18) COPYRIGHT(2019) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(5): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 23, 2019 In this fresh twist on an enduring tale, White ( Slayer ) introduces an intriguing new heroine. After the real Guinevere, a princess preparing for marriage in a convent, dies, Merlin (banished from Camelot along with all magic) replaces her with a 16-year-old forest witch who has magic at her fingertips and no clear memory of her early life. Drawn to King Arthur’s innate goodness and devotion to Camelot, she marries him to protect him from any threats. The new Guinevere is enraptured by Camelot’s sights and soon makes new friends, including her lady’s maid, Brangien,Arthur’s enigmatic nephew, Mordred, and the preternaturally skilled fighter dubbed the Patchwork Knight. When a long dormant threat awakens, Guinevere must choose her destiny: embrace the wild magic that beckons her, or fight for the hope and promise of Camelot. With immersive prose, White captures the spirit of Arthurian legend while adding diversity and a bit of powerful feminist flair in this appealing series opener, and while Guinevere is the focus, White doesn’t shortchange her supporting cast. Guinevere’s mysterious past, and her future, leaves much to be explored in future installments. Ages 12–up. Agent: Michelle Wolfson, Wolfson Literary Agency. " Rezension(6): "〈a href=http://www.slj.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/schoollibraryjournal_logo.png alt=School Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: October 1, 2019Gr 9 Up- Sixteen-year-old Guinevere knows she has a tough task ahead of her, charged by the wizard Merlin to protect King Arthur, her soon to be husband. She must do this while maintaining her secrets: she can do magic, which has been banned from Camelot and would get her thrown out, and she's not actually Guinevere. Surprisingly, Arthur is in on her secrets and is her sole confidant, though Guinevere is often left alone as he goes off to save the kingdom. She makes friends with her maid Brangien, and with Arthur's nephew, Mordred, who she initially distrusts as overly observant. Guinevere's mission is unclear as Merlin often speaks in riddles and is said to be able to walk through time, giving him knowledge of all that's to come. She increasingly questions Merlin's motives as she learns more about him, and wonders about the gaps in her memory, such as when she can't remember her real name. Her fear of water often becomes an issue and she's greatly distressed to find Camelot surrounded by the substance. First in a series, this fantasy novel will appeal to fans familiar with stories of Arthur, and provides an introduction to those unfamiliar. Well-paced background is provided for key characters who are allowed to develop realistically and grow with the story. White deftly weaves together traditional Arthurian legend with an original plot that will keep readers questioning what they know. VERDICT Full of battling knights and romance, this is a must purchase for all libraries serving teens.- Rebecca Greer, Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, FLCopyright 2019 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. Merlin has charged her with protecting the new king at all costs, but there are other players in the mix who have a different target in mind. White plays with the Round Table legend, giving Guinevere a different origin, Lancelot a gender switch, and Mordred a much more sympathetic role in the intrigue at court. This series-opener focuses on Guinevere's early days as she tries to settle into unfamiliar territory while learning the tasks of a queen. The writing is engaging, and this is undeniably a fresh take on Camelot. The author mixes action and introspection and takes care with character motivations and backstories. Arthurian legends are seeing a bit of a revival these days, so nudge interested readers toward Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy's Once & Future (2019) and Thomas Wheeler's Cursed (2019).HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: White regularly turns out best-sellers. Couple that with a robust marketing campaign and King Arthur's current popularity, and this should be another hit.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.) The sequel to 2019's The Guinevere Deception continues to retell in close third-person the story of Guinevere, a magical blank slate with almost no memories of her past and little understanding of herself other than an unshakeable conviction in Arthur, as she tries to fight like a queen rather than a witch. The plot holds few surprises, being more a study of Guinevere's internal landscape peppered with bursts of action slowed by Guinevere's constant self-doubt. Cipher Guinevere wants to understand herself, but her lack of memory means she has little depth to draw from, she has limited identity beyond the questions she ponders and asks of her world. Happily, those questions revolve around power and nature as well as recurring themes of who and how to be, providing rich intellectual fodder for readers who want a think-y book with few conclusions (although the ending implies they are coming in Volume 3). In this version of Arthur's legend, magic is chaos and female while Camelot is order and male, the exception to this dichotomy is Merlin, who is never seen directly but whose hand and lack of care drive Arthur's story and give Guinevere a model of power against which to fight. Guinevere is White, secondary characters are diverse, from those with implied Asian and African parentage to a female Lancelot and a lesbian Isolde, although only Lancelot's identity is interrogated within the context of Guinevere's questions. Thoughtful and introspective. (Fantasy. 12-18) COPYRIGHT(2020) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

In the middle of a night marked by “urgency and candles,” the siblings are transported to a mysterious home to stay with equally mysterious maternal aunt, Saffronia Sinister, who “by all appearances, had never encountered an actual human child before.” Telling them to “find what was lost,” she drops them off at the Victorian-flavored, unusually grim Fathoms of Fun Waterpark, which features a slide named Oblivion and a wave pool called Cold, Unknowable Sea. Owned by dour Mrs. Widow, the amusement park thrills adrenaline fanatic Theo and unnerves cautious Alexander as they wander the grounds under Wil’s nominal supervision, avoiding the lone eatery’s mince pie and seeking the recently disappeared Mr. Widow.
