Ein episch breit angelegtes historisch-religiöses Drama nach dem Roman von Franz Werfel. Extras: Audio Commentary with Film Historians Jon Burlingame, Edward Z. Epstein and Donald Spoto. This is an exceptionally well done commentary that combines various areas of expertise. Spoto is a film historian but also a theology professor, Burlingame is an Alfred Newman aficionado and Epstein wrote a biography of Jennifer Jones. Well edited and extremely informative. Restoration Demonstration (480i; 3:32) is the same little offering from the Studio Classics DVD and showcases the differences between the 1993 film transfer master and the 2002 film restoration. Isolated Score is presented via DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. One of Alfred Newman's towering achievements, the score is a model of Golden Age motive weaving and is a joy to hear in this lossless offering. It's fascinating to think about the recording of this score, especially since original novelist Franz Werfel was evidently in attendance for some of the sessions. That may not seem like such a big deal until you realize that Werfel's wife, who accompanied her husband to the sessions, was Gustav Mahler's widow Alma. (Blu-ray.com)
