Kurzfassung: The condensation of cyclohex-1-enylaniline (8) with 1,1-dimethyl-3- oxobutyl isothiocyanate (5) gave 1,4,5,6,7,8,9,10-octahydro-2,4,4- trimethyl-1-phenyl-1,5-benzodiazocine-6(1H)-thione (9) as the major product and 3-phenyl-4,6,6-trimethyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-2- thione (7; R = Ph) as the minor product. The similar condensations of (5) with cyclohex-1-enylmorpholine and cyclohex-1-enylpiperidine formed the 1-thiocarbamoyl derivatives through β-elimination of the intermediate (15).

Kurzfassung: The viscosities of solutions of KI in binary mixtures of water and dimethylacetamide at 35C in the concentration range 0.005-0.2 mol dm-3 are reported. The data are analysed in terms of the A and B parameters of the Jones-Dole equation. The value of the B coefficient first decreases and then increases after attaining a minimum at about 0.05 mole fraction of dimethylacetamide.

    Kurzfassung: On heating with HCl or H2SO4, 4,6,6-trimethyl-3-phenyl-3,6- dihydropyrimidine-2-thiol (1; R = Ph) formed phenylthiourea and 4,6,6- trimethyl-2-phenylamino-6H-1,3-thiazine (3; R = Ph) and not 4,4,6- trimethyl-2-phenylamino-4H-1,3-thiazine (2; R = Ph) as reported by Ignatova. In a similar reaction, 4,6,6-trimethyl-3,6-dihydropyrimidine- 2-thiol gave thiourea, 2-amino-4,6,6-trimethyl-6H- 1,3-thiazine (3; R = H) and 4,6,6-trimethyl-4-(4',4',6'-trimethyl-1',4'-dihydropyrimidin-2'-ylthio)-tetrahydropyrimidine-2(1H)-thione (9).

Kurzfassung: The free convection flow along a semi-infinite horizontal plate oscillating in its own plane is analysed The basic flow is purely buoyancy induced, while the oscillations in the plate cause a time-dependent boundary layer flow and heat transfer. The boundary layer equations are linearized and the first two approximations are considered. Two separate solutions valid for high and low frequency ranges are obtained by a series expansion in terms of frequency parameters. The skin friction and the rate of heat transfer are studied for both frequency ranges. For very high frequencies, the oscillatory flow pattern is of a 'shear-wave' type, unaffected by the mean flow. It is found that the phase of the skin friction at the plate lags that of the plate oscillations by in and the rate of heat transfer has a phase lag of 1/2n.

Kurzfassung: Inorganic bromide residues were evaluated from fumigation schedules available in Australia for use against Queensland fruit fly, Dacus tryoni (Froggatt) and light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) in fruit and vegetables. Capsicums were fumigated for two hours at 20C with 22 g m-3 ethylene dibromide (EDB). Bromide residues (40-45 g g-1) were in excess of the maximum residue limit of 10 g g-1 of the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S.F.D.A.) and the current 20 g g-1 recommendation of the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (N.H.M.R.C.). Bananas were fumigated with dosages of 10, 12 and 14 g m-3 EDB for two hours at 20C. Bromide residues increased with increasing dosages, and ranged from 11.7 to 15.6 g g-1. Residues were within the recommended 20 g g-1 limit of the N.H.M.R.C., but exceeded the 10 g g-1 limit of the U.S.F.D.A. Cherries were fumigated for two hours at 15C with 24 and 48 g m-3 methyl bromide (MB). Bromide residues (up to 8 g g-1) were well within the 20 g g-1 N.H.M.R.C. and U.S.F.D.A. limits. Apples were fumigated for two hours at 15C with 24 g MB m-3 and at 7C with 32 g MB m-3. Residues approximated or were less than the 5 g g-1 limit of the U.S.F.D.A. and considerably lower than the 20 g g-1 N.H.M.R.C. recommendation.

Kurzfassung: Variations in the regional means of a number of growing-season climatic variables, and combinations of them, are not highly correlated with the long-term regional distribution of mean wheat yields in Western Australia or with their variation between years. The data suggest that the growing season is characterized by a cyclical alternation of favourable and unfavourable conditions for crop growth. This oscillating pattern varies in amplitude and wavelength as a result of unpredictable 'between'- and 'within'-season variation in the regional distribution of rainfall. In the central zone of the study area, wheat production is subject mainly to between-season variation whilst in more marginal areas yield variation is confounded by opposing and reciprocating within-season effects. The consequences for plant breeding are that specific regional environments expected on the basis of climate do not occur predictably in the short term. It is argued that breeding objectives, selection strategies and regional testing should initially avoid complications associated with specific marginal environments by concentrating on general adaptability within the central zone, which monitors between-season variation only. Subsequent evaluation for additional adaptive features specific to marginal areas should be undertaken.

Kurzfassung: Bromomalononitrile on condensation with N-substituted thioureas furnished 4-amino-3-aryl(or allyl)-2-imino-4-thiazoline-5-carbonitriles (4). On acetylation in Ac2O/AcOH, (4) gave first mono acetyl derivatives (5) and then diacetyl derivatives (6). Thiazolines (4) and acetyl derivatives (5) underwent hydrolysis with orthophosphoric acid to the corresponding amides (8) and (7) respectively.

Kurzfassung: Levels of residues of ethylene dibromide (EDB) and inorganic bromide were measured in oranges that had been fumigated by a new EDB fumigation schedule, for the control of Queensland fruit fly. This schedule is based on 24 g EDB m-3 at 20C for 2 hours. The fumigation was conducted in 0.28 m3 chambers with 40% loading. After fumigation the fruit was held at the fumigation temperature for 24 hours then stored at 6C for a further 27 days to simulate export conditions. EDB residues in excess of the 0.5 g g-1 Australian NHMRC limit were recorded during the first 14 days, but by 28 days no EDB residues were detected. Inorganic bromide residues were well below the 30 g g-1 NHMRC and Codex limits but after 28 days they approached, and occasionally exceeded the 10g g-1 USFDA limit. Fruit that is held at ambient temperatures for 24 hours and then exported at lowered temperatures should have acceptable EDB levels after two weeks although inorganic bromide levels could exceed some overseas tolerances.

Kurzfassung: The uptake of DDT into poultry tissues arising from the use of DDT contaminated rice hulls as poultry litter was assessed in trials conducted at the Poultry Research Station, Seven Hills. Litter treatments and periods of exposure were respectively 25, 50 and 100 mg kg-1 DDT and 22 weeks for laying hens and 50 mg kg-1 DDT and up to nine weeks for broiler chickens. Feed, eggs, body fat and litter were sampled at intervals for DDT residue and analysis. DDT uptake in egg yolk increased with the period and level of treatment, the highest residuesoccurring about two months after the start of the trial. Whole egg residues (0.29-1.45 mg kg-1) in some cases (1 00 mg kg-l treatment) exceeded the 0.5 mg kg-l Codex and 1 mg kg-l Australian recommended maximum residue limits and approached the 1.5 mg kg-1 actionable level of the United States Food and Drug Administration. The body fat residues of layers at 22 weeks (3.34-10.1 mg kg-1) varied with the treatment, the 50 mg kg-1 and the 100 mg kg-1 treatments producing levels approaching or exceeding the 7 mg kg-1 Australian and overseas limits. DDT uptake in the body fat of broilers increased with the period of exposure, highest residues occurring about six weeks after the start of the trial. Residues (19-133 mg kg-1) grossly exceeded the 7 mg kg-l limits
