Abstract: The occurrence of quite different timescales in solar microwave bursts is considered and possible ways of their physical interpretation are discussed. An interesting feature is the existence of hierarchic time structures, an example of which is provided by the solar event of 1991 March 23. Plasma parameter sets to be invoked for the interpretation of timescales are estimated on the base of different models such as the collisionless conduction front model, the twisted magnetic loop model, the coalescence model, and the electric circuit model. With emphasis on the interpretation of burst fine structures with timescales of a few seconds the coalescence model has been favored. On the other hand, the simultaneous occurrence of a large range of different timescales appears well suited to be described by the circuit model. Abstract: Major problems of the physics of the solar atmosphere and processes of solar activity are due to the poor knowledge of the magnetic fields outside the photosphere. Unique methods to determine magnetic fields in the corona and chromosphere make use of radio observations in close connection with information obtained in other spectral ranges e.g. the optical and X-ray regions. Based on relevant emission and propagation processes, the basic radio methods providing information on the parent magnetic fields are summarized. Signatures in the microwave and meter wave regions are used to derive magnetic field parameters at different levels in the solar atmosphere of active regions during quiet and flaring conditions. Implications on fine and gross structures are briefly discussed and consequences on acting physical processes mentioned.

Abstract: A short compilation of various radio methods of the determination of magnetic fields in the solar corona is given which, completed by observations in other spectral ranges (e.g. the optical and X-ray ranges), results in a complex picture of the magnetic field. Some topics of interest are the following: (1) Comparison with a standard reference magnetic field in the solar corona, (2) Possible evidence of substantial small-scale fluctuations of the magnetic field (e.g. in active regions), (3) Indication of magnetic fields substantially in excess of the standard distribution (e.g. in limb flare events).

Abstract: This review considers possibilities for deriving plasma parameters and source structures of the solar chromosphere, transition region, and lower corona using observations in the centimeter and millimeter wave range. Model calculations for the S-component emission as well as for microwave bursts are described, and their diagnostic capabilities by comparison with observations are discussed.
