Germany’s nuclear power plants loom over its riverine landscapes like memorials. In 2011, Germany decided to cease generating nuclear power following the nuclear catastrophe at Fukushima Daiichi. The German Atomic Energy Act envisages that all nuclear power plants will be deconstructed and the land they stand on returned to greenfield land. Unsere Kernkraftwerke stehen wie Wahrzeichen in den deutschen Flusslandschaften – sie sind bauliche Zeugen einer erbitterten gesellschaftlichen und politischen Auseinandersetzung über Energie, Wirtschaft und Technikgläubigkeit. Infolge der nuklearen Katastrophe von Fukushima Daiichi hat Deutschland 2011 den Ausstieg aus der Kernenergie beschlossen: Das Atomgesetz sieht vor, alle Kraftwerke bis auf die grüne Wiese zurückzubauen. Dabei sind nur etwa 3 Prozent der grauen Energie, die in den gigantischen Baumassen steckt, tatsächlich radioaktiv belastet. Das Buch bietet einen sachlichen Zugang zur Geschichte der Kernenergie, den eingesetzten Technologien und deren Rückbau sowie Übersichtsgrafiken mit Informationen zu allen deutschen Leistungsreaktoren. Ein Fotoessay des Zeitzeugen Günter Zint dokumentiert die mit den Kernkraftwerken verbundene Protestkultur. Gezeigt werden zudem sieben Möglichkeiten der Nachnutzung dieser unbequemen Denkmale – ein Ansatz, der lange nicht für möglich gehalten wurde
