Abstract: This study aimed to examine the effects of interpersonal factors (i.e., teacher and peers) on academic hatred using the hierarchical linear model analysis. The data were collected from 1,015 senior high school students from 43 classrooms (57.3% female) in South Korea. The results showed significant effects of teachers’ academic pressure, autonomy support, and peer support on academic hatred at both the individual and classroom levels. Interestingly, teachers’ academic pressure showed different effects on academic hatred at the individual and classroom levels: a negative effect at the individual level and a positive one at the classroom level. At the classroom level, peer support did not significantly influence academic hatred, while at the individual level, peer support negatively affected academic hatred by interacting with teachers’ autonomy support. This paper discusses the practical implications for preventing academic hatred in the classroom.

Abstract: This study examines the role of dysfunctional career thoughts between two-wave longitudinal data (Time 1 and Time 2) in career decision-making self-efficacy during school-to-work transition periods. Career decision-making self-efficacy was measured before (Time 1) and after college graduation (Time 2). The results indicated that the growth of dysfunctional career thoughts during school-to-work transition periods negatively mediated the two time points (Time 1 and Time 2) of career decision-making self-efficacy. This study also examines the moderation effect of planned happenstance career skills, which refers the individuals’ skills in generating learning experiences during unexpected events on the relationship between dysfunctional career thoughts and career decision-making self-efficacy. College students’ career decision self-efficacy (Time 1) appeared to weaken individual’s career decision self-efficacy after college graduation (Time 2) via dysfunctional career thoughts when students were less likely to have developed planned happenstance career skills in order to discover unexpected career opportunities during school-to-work transition periods.

Abstract: This study used meta-analysis to investigate the relationships between career decision self-efficacy (CDSE) and its relevant variables. The authors aimed to integrate the mixed results reported by previous empirical studies and obtain a clearer understanding of CDSE’s role within the framework of social cognitive career theory (SCCT). For purposes of this study, the authors searched and selected nine relevant variables (gender, age, race, self-esteem, vocational identity, career barriers, peer support, vocational outcome expectation, and career indecision). While some variables (i.e., gender, race, and career barriers) did not have a significant effect on CDSE, in accordance with the SCCT model, CDSE correlated significantly to self-esteem, vocational identity, peer support, vocational outcome expectation, and career indecision variables. The authors discuss these results in the context of the SCCT.

Abstract: The factor structure of the Stress Mindset Measure (SMM), an 8-item questionnaire, has been explored in several countries, showing inconsistent results. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the SMM with a Korean sample. A total of 912 participants completed the online survey (women = 59.3%) at T1, and a random subsample selected from T1 sample ( n = 259, women = 62.9%) participated in the survey again at T2. At both time points, the results of confirmatory factor analyses supported a three-factor hierarchical model with three lower-order factors (i.e., learning and growth, performance and productivity, and health and vitality) and one higher-order general factor with correlated errors among three negatively worded items. In the model, 2 items measuring the “general” domain were deleted based on high correlations with the higher-order factor. Longitudinal factor analysis revealed that the revised factor structure and loadings were invariant over 6-month period. Theoretical validity was supported through significant correlations between the total score of the 6-item SMM and other stress-related measures. Overall, our results indicate that the Korean version of the SMM is a valid instrument and suggest using a total score of 6 items.

Abstract: This article utilizing unique data on 37,655 public complaints in South Korea from April 2021 to March 2022 aims to unveil the association between sentiments in public complaints or petitions and government response speed. We estimate sentiments in each complaint with five morphological analyzers and employ negative binomial regression models. The empirical results demonstrate that public complaints with the sentiment of Fear tend to receive faster governmental responses while complaints with the sentiment of Sorrow are more likely to be addressed slowly. The influence of the sentiment of Fear and Sorrow is consistently robust in logistic event history models, while the sentiment of Anger is not statistically significant anymore. The results contribute to the literature on political psychology by demonstrating that facing public complaints dominated by different sentiments can influence the efficiency of civil servants. At the same time, this article suggests providing periodical counseling and education for civil servants who continuously face waves of negative sentiments to treat public complaints expertly.

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the longitudinal relationships between planned happenstance skills (PHS) and life adjustment and to examine whether this relationship was moderated by the degree of career barriers. The participants were 307 Korean college students going through a school-to-work transition. The results showed that PHS preceded and were positively associated with life adjustment. Additionally, the association between PHS and life adjustment differed by the levels of career barriers; individuals with greater PHS were more likely to adjust well in life even when they perceived high career barriers. The findings suggest empirical support for planned happenstance theory. Implications regarding career counseling interventions for college students in a school-to-work transition are discussed.

Abstract: This study aimed to verify the relationship between ideal sleep duration and physical fitness in South Korean adults and older adults. The secondary analysis data of 2,832 adults (19–64 years) and 629 older adults (65 years and above), obtained from the 2015 National Fitness Survey, were analyzed. Participants completed various physical fitness tests (grip strength, sit-ups, standing long jump, 50 m dash, sit-and-reach, and 20 m shuttle run in adults; grip strength, sit-up, sit-to-stand, sit-and-reach, back-scratch, one-leg standing test, and 6-minute walk in older adults) and were divided into four groups based on self-reported sleep duration. Group differences in physical fitness variables were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson’s correlation was used to verify the relationship between sleep duration and physical fitness; statistical significance was set at p  〈  .05. In adult males, there was a positive correlation between explosive muscular strength (standing long jump) and sleep duration ( p = .046), whereas in adult females, there was a negative correlation between cardiopulmonary endurance (20 m shuttle run) and sleep duration ( p =.026). However, in older adults, there was no significant correlation between sleep duration and physical fitness ( p  〉  .05). Further, across the sample, there were no significant group differences in physical fitness variables. A positive correlation exists between sleep duration and muscular strength in adult males and a negative correlation between sleep duration and cardiorespiratory endurance in adult females. Designing sleep and exercise programs based on these results may improve physical fitness among adults and older adults. Future studies that include controlled variables that affect physical fitness and sleep patterns are warranted.

Abstract: The development of physicians’ core competency is related to the quality of medical practice. Accordingly, knowing how to cultivate and evaluate core competency is an important issue for medical education and management. This study used the comprehensive core competency framework proposed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and employed fuzzy AHP (FAHP) and DEMANTEL methods to analyze the weight and priority, as well as the cause-and-effect cluster. The FAHP analysis yielded the following rankings of factors’ importance: (1) patient care (C1; 27.83%), (2) medical knowledge (C2; 20.77%), (3) professionalism (C5; 17.93%), (4) interpersonal and communication skills (C4; 17.41%), (5) practice-based learning and improvement (C3; 15.52%), and (6) systems-based practice (C6; 8.233%). In terms of the DEMANTEL, the effect cluster included patient care (C1), professionalism (C5) and systems-based practice (C6), and the cause cluster included medical knowledge (C2), practice-based learning and improvement (C3), and interpersonal and communication skills (C4). The findings showed that patient care (C1) results from attitudes, patience, and the other five ACGME Core Competencies. Furthermore, emergency physicians’ development also requires humanities and ethics training and practice to ensure practice-based learning (C3). This study demonstrates the importance of various factors in developing emergency physicians’ core competencies, and the findings may provide a reference for future attempts at such competency development.
