Abstract: This study assessed the impact of four different concentrations (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 μg/L) of mercury exposure on Manila clam Venerupis philippinarum based on the dynamic characteristics of antioxidant related enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total glutathione content, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content at 24 h and 48 h post exposure. The results showed that hemocyte SOD activity was inhibited while GR hemocyte activity significantly increased in the 2.5 μg/L group after 24 h. Hemocyte ALP activity and (GSH) content were also elevated at the 7.5 μg/L and 10 μg/L groups when exposed for 24 h, respectively. SOD activity, GR activity, ALP activity and GSH content in the hemocytes were relatively sensitive to different concentrations of mercuric mercury (Hg2+), suggesting that they may act as potential biomarkers in assessing environmental mercury exposure on Venerupis philippinarum. At different levels of exposure, antioxidant parameters showed differing responses in gill tissue, but no biomarkers were discovered in the samples examined. We found that hemocytes are more suitable biomarkers than proteins in gill tissue. Some hemocyte biomarkers are promising candidates for monitoring mercury pollution in marine clams.

Abstract: In August 2019, an unknown disease was first reported in farmed seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) in Binhai New Area in Tianjin city, China, with a cumulative mortality rate of 25% within seven days of onset. The main symptoms of the affected seahorses were discoloration of the body surface, abdominal distention, kidney erosion, and intestinal enlargement. Histopathological observation revealed apparent damage to the diseased seahorses’ intestines, liver, and kidneys. Strains HM-2019-5 and HM-2019-6 were isolated from diseased kidneys and identified as Photobacterium sp. based on physiological and biochemical tests and 16S rDNA sequencing analysis. Artificial infection experiments demonstrated that strain HM-2019-5 could cause a 90% morbidity rate in healthy seahorses. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that HM-2019-5 and HM-2019-6 were resistant to 13 of 16 antimicrobial agents tested. This is the first report of photobacterial disease in a seahorse to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract: An accurate and convenient method for determining Microcystis cell viability is necessary to control blooms in small aquaculture water bodies. The fluorescein diacetate-propidium iodide (FDA-PI) staining method was developed to determine the viability of toxic Microcystis aeruginosa (FACHB905). Live M. aeruginosa 905 cells, stained with FDA, emitted bright green fluorescence after excitation at 470 nm. Dead cells, stained with PI, produced bright red fluorescence after excitation at 540 nm. Berberine inhibited M. aeruginosas 905 growth and the inhibition rate determined by FDA-PI fluorescein staining and counting on a dark field was much higher than when determined by counting on a bright field because some berberine-killed cells were misidentified as live cells. Thus, less berberine is needed to control Microcystis bloom when the accurate and reliable FDA-PI fluorescein staining method is used to judge the viability of the algae cells.

Abstract: This trial investigated the effect of dietary Ginkgo biloba leaf (GBL) on the growth performance and nonspecific immunity of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. 180 Crayfishes were randomly divided into three groups. One group was fed with basic diet, whereas the other two groups were fed with diets containing 1% and 3% GBL. After 32 days of feeding, GBL addition tended to increase the body weight gain rate compared with control. In 3% GBL group, the bodyweight gain rate of male crayfish was higher than that of female crayfish. While female crayfish were advantageous in terms of meat yield. Liver-related indexes were influenced by GBL addition and 3% GBL could reduce glutamic pyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase as well as total cholesterol in male crayfish, showing its function in liver protection. Moreover, GBL addition effects on liver protection was better in male crayfish than female crayfish.

Abstract: This study aimed to improve our understanding of the genetics of the Chinese bay scallop (Argopecten irradians irradians), one of the most important maricultured shellfish in China. Ten polymorphic microsatellite loci were examined to assess the allelic diversity, heterozygosity, and genetic variation between two domesticated populations selected for fast growth in breeding programs, and their base population. Forty-one alleles were found throughout the loci and the mean number of alleles per locus ranged 3.30-3.50. The average heterozygosity ranged 0.38-0.45, whereas the polyamorphic information content ranged 0.1504-0.7518. Genetic differences between the three populations were detected based on the number of alleles per locus, effective number of alleles, Shannon index, inbreeding coefficient (Fis), p values, genetic distance, and pairwise Fst values. There was no significant loss of genetic variability in the breeding program but changes in gene frequencies were detectable over the populations, implying that thea loci were saffected by the pressures of selective culture.

Abstract: Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) is a key and essential adapter involved in the interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) and toll-like receptor (TLR)-mediated activation signaling pathway. To investigate molecular characterization of MyD88 and its gene expression profile in response to stimulation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and polyinosinic-cytidylic acid (poly (I: C)), we isolated the MyD88 cDNA sequence in Pinctada fucata and analyzed expression patterns using quantitative real-time PCR. Sequence analysis indicated that Pf-MyD88 cDNA is 1463bp in length and contains a1050bp open reading frame that encodes a 349 α peptide. Pf-MyD88 has the highest similarity with homologues of Crassostrea gigas and highly conserved death and toll/IL-1R domains. Furthermore, during LPS and poly (I:C)-stimulated experiments in the gill, peak expression levels of Pf-MyD88 were detected at 2h and 8h with a 1.58-fold and 3.58-fold increase, respectively. The results revealed the existence of a MyD88-dependent signaling pathway in P. fucata and contributed to understanding the potential role of Pf-MyD88 in the TLR/IL-1R-mediated signaling pathway.

Abstract: The juvenile carps (Cyprinus carpio) were fed diets with four protein sources (15% and 30% glyphosate-resistant genetically modified (GM) named GM 15 and GM 30, respectively, and 15% and 30% non-genetically modified (NGM) soybean named NGM 15 and NGM 30) for 180 days. Results showed that alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity for the GM30 group was significantly lower than that of the NGM30 group. The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the hepatopancreas of carp for the GM30 group was significantly higher than that of the NGM15 group (P 〈 0.05). And the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) for the GM30 group was higher than that of the NGM30 group during the whole culturing process (P 〈 0.05). The activity of catalase (CAT) for the GM30 group was significantly lower than that of the NGM30 group during 60 days and 180 days (P 〈 0.05). While no significant differences were observed in the growth indexes, organ indexes, and muscle nutritional components of carp among the four groups (P 〉 0.05). This study indicates that it may aggravate the damage degree of intestinal epithelial cells of carp and more easily cause liver cell damage in the short term when the amount of GM soybean in the feeds was 30%. Therefore, higher glyphosate-resistant GM soybean may have adverse effects on the carp’s serum, intestinal, and hepatopancreas and considerably reduce the hepatopancreatic carp’s antioxidant capacity.

Abstract: Interleukins (ILs) are a group of cytokines which play a core regulatory role in the immune system. In the present study, two members of the IL family, IL7 and IL8, were detected in Trachinotus ovatus. IL7 and IL8 cDNAs of T. ovatus consist of a 492 bp and 300 bp ORF (open reading frame) encoding a polypeptide of 163 and 99 amino acids, respectively. Multiple sequence alignment revealed that IL7 and IL8 contain characteristic arrangements of several conserved cysteine residues, which in T. ovatus are in positions 20, 57, 67, 105, 140, 152 and 35, 37, 61, 78, respectively. The phylogenetic tree showed that all ILs fell into four categories. Moreover, IL7 and IL8 mRNA of T. ovatus were constitutively expressed at different levels in all examined tissues, except muscle. Transcripts of IL7 were mainly expressed in liver, intestine, kidney, stomach, and fin, while transcripts of IL8 were highly detected in the eye, liver, kidney, and intestine of healthy fish. After Photobacterium damselae innoculation, mRNA levels of IL7 were higher than IL8 in the spleen and intestine, however, mRNA expression levels of IL7 were lower than IL8 in kidney 3 h post-injection. These results suggest that the two IL molecules play an important role in the inflammatory response of T. ovatus.

Abstract: Efficient and sustainable strategies for C−H functionalization are crucial in organic synthesis. Bioinspired catalytic systems have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional synthetic methods. These systems draw inspiration from nature‘s ability to selectively functionalize complex molecules in water‐based environments. Among these, chelation‐assisted C−H functionalization stands out due to its ability to guide the substrate towards the active site of the catalyst, thereby controlling the selectivity of the reaction. This review focuses on the use of chelation assistance to enhance the efficiency and selectivity of bioinspired C−H functionalization reactions in aqueous media. We cover aliphatic, aromatic, and alkenyl C−H functionalization, as well as tandem C−H activation/cyclization, utilizing metallocycle intermediates. Additionally, we highlight the underlying mechanisms of these reactions for a deeper understanding and development of novel methodologies.
