Content: Newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets and books all reflect the ubiquity of 'public opinion' in political discourse in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Britain. Through close attention to debates across the political spectrum, James Thompson charts the ways in which Britons sought to locate 'public opinion' in an era prior to polling. He shows that 'public opinion' was the principal term through which the link between the social and the political was interrogated, charted and contested and charts how the widespread conviction that the public was growing in power raised significant issues about the kind of polity emerging in Britain. He also examines how the early Labour party negotiated the language of 'public opinion' and sought to articulate Labour interests in relation to those of the public. In so doing he sheds important new light on the character of Britain's liberal political culture and on Labour's place in and relationship to that culture.

Content: "This book presents a hands-on approach to the basic principles of empirical model building through the shrewd mixture of differential equations, computer-intensive methods, and data in a single-volume. It includes a series of real-world statistical problems illustrating modeling skills and techniques that are applicable to a broad range of audiences from applied statisticians to practicing MBAs. It covers models of growth and decay, systems where competition and interaction add to the complexity of the model, and discusses both classical and non-classical data analysis methods, alongside an extended list of more than twenty essential topics. The author also includes numerous exercises, an emphasis on computational finance and Bayesian techniques, and timely discussions of epidemics, quality control, and chaos in a dynamic world"--

Content: Applied Theatre: Bewilderment and Beyond explores the practice of theatre in communities and social institutions with marginalised groups. It shifts between contexts and countries to examine different ways that theatre has been applied to a wide range of social issues. Theatre projects in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom are analysed to argue for a complex and questioning view of the practice. Initiatives in prisons, developing countries, war situations and participatory research projects become the sites to interrogate the claims that applied theatre can be a theatre for social change. Many practitioners and researchers have witnessed powerful applied theatre projects but nonetheless struggled to articulate the reasons for the projects’ success. This book uses the questions inspired by that perplexity to create a case for applied theatre as a major area of contemporary theatre practice.
Content: «It’s a pleasure to review a book, which also turns out to be so personally useful […] a provocative and fascinating read.» (Prof. Jonothan Neelands, Research in Drama Education) «This is a theoretically complex account that […] lays stress on the crucial role of facilitators in welcoming difficulty and complexity whilst offering participants and colleagues creative development with containment, support and ethical awareness. Necessary reading.» (Frances Rifkin, practitioner, Artistic Director of Utopia Arts and author of ‘The Ethics of Participatory Theatre in Higher Education’, 2010) «Interesting, thought provoking and deeply inspiring, Thompson’s book unravels the most fundamental concerns of practising theatre in non-theatre contexts. His personal reflections provide essential insights into the world of applied theatre, its challenges, its controversies and even its beauty. This book is a key resource for anyone interested in applied theatre.» (Dr Zoe Zontou, Teaching Fellow, Liverpool Hope University)
