Content: This collection consists of of 94 English language documents and one translation from the German. While the time coverage is vast (from 800 B.C. to the 1980s) and there is good historical depth, the focus is primarily on rural Greek society in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly in the mainland regions of Boeotia, Piraeus, Kokinia, Zagor, Epiros, and central Macedonia and the major Aegean or Greek islands of Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos, and the Cyclades (Tinos, Anafi). Also included are comprehensive studies on the Sarakatsani nomads of the Zagori, Epirus, Thessaly, and central Greece regions. Several documents deal with the city of Athens

Content: The Iban are an indigenous group in Sarawak, a state of Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. This file on the Iban consists of 35 documents. The dates covered by the literature are from ca. 1840-1990. Predominant themes are agriculture (primarily rice cultivation), culture history, migrations, religion, and warfare (including much information on head-hunting). The works of Freeman, one of the outstanding modern authorities on the Iban, used in conjunction with the earlier descriptive accounts of Low, Howell, and Gomes, and supplemented by the more recent ethnographies of Pringle, Sutlive, Wagner, Benedict Sandin, and Padoch, provide a good overall view of Iban culture and society

Content: This collection of 6 documents covers the time period from the middle of the nineteenth century to the 1980s with an emphasis on some of the major Chinatowns located in several Canadian cities. Much of the file deals with the migration of the Chinese to Canada and the restrictive immigration policies applied to them by the Canadian government. Nearly all the documents address the discriminatory and racist practices imposed on the Chinese immigrants by the Caucasian Canadian society. Probably the best general coverage on the Chinese in Canada is presented in Li, which deals with the period from their first arrival in Canada in 1858 to about 1985. Lai is a definitive history of Chinatowns in Canada from 1858-ca. 1985, with particular reference to Victoria, British Columbia. Works describing specific Chinatowns in specific cities begins with Thompson, which is an examination of the history and social organization of the Chinese population in Toronto, Canada. Anderson contributes a systematic analysis of the relationship between Vancouver's Chinese and Canadian communities from the late 1880s to about 1980. Hoe presents a socio-historical study of the structural changes taking place in various Chinese communities in British Columbia and Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton), from the mid-nineteenth century to ca. 1972

This file contains fifteen documents covering the time period from ca. 1848 to the 1980s. These documents deal with Chinatowns located in several American cities (e.g., San Francisco, New York City), plus additional data on the Chinese American populations in such regional areas as the Monterey Bay region of California, and Hawaii. Much of the file deals with the history of the migration of the Chinese to the United States and the restrictive immigration policies applied to them by the United States government. Content: The African American Collection provides information on history, race relations, civil rights movement, culture and contemporary economic problems, circa 1620s to 2000s. Davis and Pinkey cover from the earliest days of slavery up to about 1970. Four documents deal with racial segregation and discrimination both prior to and immediately after the civil rights movements. Three documents feature in-depth portrayals of individual life histories, communities and families, and kinship networks and migration patterns. Two documents provide a theoretically complex discussion of race relations and opportunities in urban communities. Two recent documents address deconstructing erroneous representations of African Americans in scholarly discourse and public policy and education and popular culture. The remaining documents discuss the continuity of racial discrimination and class- and gender-based exploitation in the lives of African American women and artists

Content: This collection of 31 documents about the Yoruba covers the time period from 1880 to the 1960s. The book by anthropologist William R. Bascom (1969) provides comprehensive first-hand ethnographic accounts of Yoruba culture as observed in 1937-1938, 1950-1951 and 1965. Articles by Bascom discuss aspects of Yoruba culture and society including social structure, cult groups and divination, functions of local credit institutions, and food and cooking. Other anthropological studies include both broad ethnographic surveys, and relatively short manuscripts examining specific themes including political structure, lineage groups, kinship and marriage, class and economic differentiation, craft organization, land tenure and tenancy, urbanization and change, and divination, cult groups, witchcraft and dynamics of gender and religion. Also included in the collection are reports by a senior colonial government official and two missionaries. The collection focuses largely on Yoruba communities in Nigeria, except Parrinder (1947) who provides a brief ethnographic survey of the Yoruba in Benin (formerly Dahomey). Readers will also find useful information in Matory and Bascom (1969) relating to the influences of Yoruba religion and art forms on the cultures of peoples of African origin in the Caribbean, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States

Content: The Shipibo occupy the central Ŕio Ucayali region of eastern Peru and its major western tributaries. This file consists of twenty-four documents, three in Spanish, and the remaining twenty-one in English. The major time focus for these studies ranges from the 1950s to the 1980s. Most of the works consist of community studies centering around villages located in the Pisqui and Ucayali River areas of Peru (e.g., the villages of Nuevo Eden, Panaillo, Paococha, Yarinacocha, Roboya, and San Francisco de Yarinacocha). There is no single comprehensive work providing ethnographic coverage for all the Shipibo in Peru. The two works by Eakin, however -- one in Spanish and the second an updated version of the first but in English -- do provide a wide range of cultural data on the Shipibo of the Ucayali River area. In addition to these, Behrens (1988) provides comparable information on the village of Nuevo Eden, located at the headwaters of the Pisqui River. Other major topics discussed in this file are food, food production, agriculture, diet, the Shipibo ceramic industry, fertility and contraception, puberty rites, and kinship behavior and kinship terminology
