Series Statement: Contemporary studies in economic and financial analysis, v. 91
Content: The volume focuses on litigation damages, economic and non-economic, including punitive damages; their definitions, calculations, and assignments in the US and EU. The objective is to examine areas of convergence and divergence in the academic and practical treatment of damages issues in the US and EU. Many of the chapters in the volume are drawn from the papers and discussions generated at the Trans-Atlantic Dialogue meetings of the National Association of Forensic Economics that began in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2004. That meeting focused on the development of the 'Ogden' multipliers for calculating damages mandated for consideration by UK Courts in 1999. The 2005 meetings (Dublin, Ireland) centred on Markov methodologies used in the US for generating work-life tables and their adoption into damages multipliers, punitive damages, and the process of Irish tort reform. In 2006 discussions in Florence, Italy, focused on methods for calculating non-economic damages in the US and EU as well as the process of harmonization of tort law within the EU. Most recently, the 2007 discussions in Barcelona, Spain, dealt with comparisons of scheduled damages systems in the US and the EU.

Content: This book argues that the Dutch East India Company empire manifested itself through multiple networks that amalgamated spatially and over time into an imperial web whose sovereignty was effectively created and maintained but always partial and contingent. Networks of Empire proposes that early modern empires were comprised of durable networks of trade, administration, settlement, legality, and migration whose regional circuits and territorially and institutionally based nodes of regulatory power operated not only on land and sea but discursively as well. Rights of sovereignty were granted to the company by the States General in the United Provinces. Company directors in Europe administered the exercise of sovereignty by company servants in its chartered domain. The empire developed in dynamic response to challenges waged by individuals and other sovereign entities operating within the Indian Ocean grid. By closely examining the Dutch East India Company's network of forced migration this book explains how empires are constituted through the creation, management, contestation, devolution and reconstruction of these multiple and intersecting fields of partial sovereignty.

    Series Statement: Law in context
Content: The relationship between law and terrorism has re-emerged recently as a pressing issue in contemporary jurisprudence. Terrorism appears to take law to its limit, whilst the demands of counter-terrorism hold the cause of justice in contempt. At this point the case for engaging alternative intellectual approaches and resources is compelling. Ian Ward argues that through a closer appreciation of the ethical and aesthetical dimensions of terror, as well as the historical, political and cultural, we can better comprehend modern expressions and experiences of terrorism. For this reason, alongside juristic responses to modern expressions of terrorism, Law, Text, Terror examines a variety of supplementary literary texts as well as alternative intellectual approaches; from the drama of Euripides and Shakespeare, to the rhetoric and poetry of Burke and Shelley, the literary feminisms of Lessing and Rame, and the narrative existentialism of Conrad, Coetzee, Dostoevsky and DeLillo.
Note: Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015). , Introduction : Law, text, terror -- Terror and the sense sublime -- Angry Jove -- Voices of the terrified -- Where are the women? -- Stark humanity -- The stuff of nightmares -- Conclusion : the devil's big day.

Content: Not so long ago, the only respectable question for philosophical, legal, and political scholars to ask about torture was how to ensure its effective legal prohibition. Recently, however, some leading lawyers and legal theorists have challenged those who are absolutely opposed to torture, arguing that, in some circumstances, torture may be morally permissible or even required. This has provoked a range of responses, from outraged dismissal to cautious concessions that the law has to adjust to new realities. This volume contains writings by some of the leading contributors to these debates. Distinctively, it supplements the discussion about the morality of torture - and the morality of discussing torture - with essays which provide important legal, sociological, and historical analyses of this appalling human practice and of the attempts to control it. With an international and interdisciplinary authorship, Torture: Moral Absolutes and Ambiguities will be essential reading for legal and political theorists, philosophers, sociologists, historians, and indeed anybody interested in serious and informed thinking about this most disturbing phenomenon

Content: This collection of 31 documents about the Yoruba covers the time period from 1880 to the 1960s. The book by anthropologist William R. Bascom (1969) provides comprehensive first-hand ethnographic accounts of Yoruba culture as observed in 1937-1938, 1950-1951 and 1965. Articles by Bascom discuss aspects of Yoruba culture and society including social structure, cult groups and divination, functions of local credit institutions, and food and cooking. Other anthropological studies include both broad ethnographic surveys, and relatively short manuscripts examining specific themes including political structure, lineage groups, kinship and marriage, class and economic differentiation, craft organization, land tenure and tenancy, urbanization and change, and divination, cult groups, witchcraft and dynamics of gender and religion. Also included in the collection are reports by a senior colonial government official and two missionaries. The collection focuses largely on Yoruba communities in Nigeria, except Parrinder (1947) who provides a brief ethnographic survey of the Yoruba in Benin (formerly Dahomey). Readers will also find useful information in Matory and Bascom (1969) relating to the influences of Yoruba religion and art forms on the cultures of peoples of African origin in the Caribbean, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States
