    Format: XI, 206 S. , Ill.
    ISBN: 0805793240 , 0805793356
    Series Statement: Twayne's filmmaker series
Content: Americans have been fantastically preoccupied with rediscovery in recent years. Our rock 'n roll stars are as popular in their sixties as they were in the sixties, penny loafers are au courant, grass is once again the preferred carpet for our beloved ballparks, and scholars and moviegoers alike (not to mention the movie industry) have rediscovered the classic Hollywood studio film
Content: Long despised as thoughtless fodder designed strictly for commercial purposes, the studio film is now viewed as among the most interesting and informative of cultural products available. Of all the classic forms of Hollywood cinema, though, perhaps the most intriguing and unusual is the edgy, blistering authentic postwar picture known as film noir
Content: These morbid tales of criminality, fatal attraction, and social failure are now the subject of scholarly writing, international film festivals, and high-ticket Hollywood remakes

    Series Statement: Contemporary film directors
Content: "With landmark films such as Fargo, O Brother Where art Thou?, Blood Simple, and Raising Arizona, the Coen brothers have achieved both critical and commercial success. Proving the existence of a viable market for "small" films that are also intellectually rewarding, their work has exploded generic conventions amid rich webs of transtextural references. In Joel and Ethan Coen, R. Barton Palmer argues that the Coen oeuvre also forms a central element in what might be called postmodernist filmmaking. Mixing high and low cultural sources and blurring genres like noir and comedy, the use of pastiche and anti-realist elements in films such as The Hudsucker Proxy and Barton Fink clearly fit the postmodernist paradigm. Palmer argues that for a full understanding of the Coen brothers unique position within film culture, it is important to see how they have developed a new type of text within general postmodernist practice that Palmer terms commercial/independent. Analyzing their substantial body of work from this "generic" framework is the central focus on this book."--Book cover.

Content: "Rule, Britannia! surveys the British biopic, a genre crucial to understanding how national cinema engages with the collective experience and values of its intended audience. The volume focuses on how screen biographies of prominent figures in British history and culture can be understood as involved, if unofficially, in the shaping and promotion of an ever-protean national identity. The contributors engage with the vexed concept of British nationality, especially as this sense of collective belonging is problematized by the ethnically oriented alternatives of English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish nations. They explore the critical and historiographical issues raised by the biopic, demonstrating that celebration of conventional virtue is not the genre's only natural subject. The chapters cover filmic depictions of such personalities as Elizabeth I, Victoria, George VI, Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, Iris Murdoch, and Jack the Ripper. Rule, Britannia! offers a provocative take on an aspect of filmmaking with profound cultural significance"--
