Content: "Karl Gerstner's work is a milestone in the history of design. One of his most important works is Designing Programmes, which is presented here in a new edition of the original 1964 publication. In four essays, the author provides a basic introduction to his design methodology. Instead of set recipes, the method suggests a model for design in the early days of the computer era. The intellectual models it proposes, however, continue to be useful today. What it does not purvey is cut-and-dried, true-or-false solutions or absolutes of any kind - instead, it develops fundamental principles in an innovative and future-oriented way. The book is especially topical and exciting in the context of current developments in computational design, which seem to hold out the possibility of programmed design. With many examples from the worlds of graphic and product design, music, architecture, and art, it inspires the reader to seize on the material, develop it further, and integrate it into his or her own work."

Content: "Furniture Studio explores the origins, methods, results, and influence of the unique and highly successful furniture design and fabrication studios offered by the University of Washington Department of Architecture. The furniture program, initiated by Andris Vanags, is an immersion into the role of materials, design, and making in architectural education. Students directly engage the physical properties of materials, and the knowledge gained through this engagement enriches the design and fabrication process. The experiences of its graduates reveal that the studio fosters creative thinking that truly integrates design and making. Ochsner presents historical background to shop-based courses, including furniture studio; traces the careers of four representative graduates of the program; and suggests implications from this program for architectural education and individual achievement beyond the University of Washington. Eleven students and the projects they created in the winter 2009 studio are profiled, and the book contains a fully illustrated catalogue of exemplary student projects from 1989 to the present. Illustrations and descriptions throughout the book showcase the heirloom-quality projects created by the students, many of which won awards in competitions."

-- "Hans Dieter Schaal (* 1943 in Ulm) is a German architect, stage designer, landscape designer, author and artist. In 1965 he began studying architecture at the Technical University of Hannover and finished it in 1970 with a diploma at the Technical University of Stuttgart. Since then he works freelance. In 1976 he was a scholarship holder of the Villa Massimo in Rome. He has been operating his office and studio in Attenweiler since 1982. Schaal is primarily active in the fields of exhibition design, stage design and landscape architecture and connects the disciplines with each other. He became known as a stage designer through many years of collaboration with Ruth Berghaus, costume designer Marie-Luise Strandt and dramaturge Sigrid Neef. His first work for the director in 1983 was the stage design for the opera Die Trojan in Frankfurt. Until 1993, a total of ten opera productions were created in collaboration with Ruth Berghaus. Since then he has worked on many international stages with well-known directors. In recent years, especially with Arila Siegert. In addition, Schaal has designed the rooms of numerous well-known exhibitions, museums and memorials. In 2012 he exhibited a large selection of his models and drawings in the Ulmer Museum under the title Denkgebäude (with moon). The span ranged from realized architectural designs to imaginative stage sets to surrealistic depictions like the "Doors field", a labyrinth of walls and doors that lead nowhere. In 2011 he received the Upper Swabian Art Prize."

-- "The 'Compendium for literates' is a 'system of writing'. That is, an ordered inventory of all their possibilities; not more, not less. The first edition was published in 1972. At that time, in the blurb, "The compendium provides parameters for the programming of an electronically controlled computer typography for a not so distant future." Well, the future has become present with a vehemence that nobody foresaw. Today, the over 500-year-old Black Art is completely changed in its condition: the digitization has prevailed, the lead has become obsolete; All conceivable liberties have become technically possible. This opens up new categories of design - and contains the danger: that long-practiced typographic virtues and rules flatten and disappear. The 'Compendium' is more up to date than ever. May the fourth edition - according to the author's intentions - contribute, first, to mitigate the widespread horror of the new technology; and secondly, more importantly, to make meaningful use of their unlimited possibilities."

-- "Deep restructuring of large industrial areas will determine the future of European cities and regions. More and more outdated industrial plants are abandoned. But which development potentials do disused factories, industrial wasteland and partly abandoned workers' settlements offer? Can you get it and use it again? The present volume presents different methods and strategic tools to improve the chances of reuse of industrial buildings and plant settlements. The authors took the advantage of a direct examination of the buildings by examining the industrial legacy of the Lusatian industrial area on site. As a result, new opportunities for use and financing as well as project development and project sponsorship are presented. The presented win-win solutions offer opportunities for users, owners and communities. A pragmatic structure of the book, oriented to analysis, evaluation and strategy, a clear layout with many sketches and photos make it a compendium - also for decision makers of the future."

Content: "This thesis consists of a research part and a design project part. The rest of the research part is organised in the following way: In the second chapter Norway's technological modernization in the late 19th century and its path after independence will be described before the third chapter will focus on the destructive effects of World War II. Then chapter four will highlight the golden era of Norwegian design and the times of international promotion at the world-famous Milan Triennial. Moreover, three influential Norwegian designers of the time, Grete Prytz Kittelsen, Willy Johansson and Birger Dahl, will be introduced in more detail. Subsequently, chapter five will devote itself to the manifold reasons of the slow decay of Norwegian design. Afterwards, chapter six will shed light on the current revival of Norwegian design and the reasons for its 'resurrection'. Additionally, three contemporary Norwegian designers, Andreas Engesvik, Hallgeir Homstved and Kristine Bjaadal, will be presented. Chapter seven will then conclude. In the following design project part of this thesis I will explain how my Norwegian heritage guided me in the creation of a product deeply rooted in the traditions of my homeland. I created a pendant lamp inspired by an old fishing net technique, manufactured by a Berlin-based glassblower."
