This is a far-reaching answer and a concrete proposal to the question "How would we like to live today?". The urban development model on the Charlottenburger Mierendorffinsel, applies the cooperative process in which 33 international architecture firms designed three houses for three building sites based on jointly formulated rules. Each of the houses is intended to create the conditions for a socially, demographically, culturally, and functionally diverse structure for the WerkBundStadt, in terms of architecture and urban space, providing flexible structures and layouts that enable fundamental changes later on without substantial interventions. Together and without an external jury, one house was chosen respectively that fulfilled all the aforementioned criteria, whilst each firm continued to participate in the ensuing process. This book presents the location for the new WerkBundStadt, comments on the results of the procedure, and presents in detail the designs by the 33 architecture firms, with plans and images.
