    Inhalt: The Mende Collection covers cultural, economic and environmental information circa 1890s to 1990s. The most comprehensive source is by Kenneth Little, a British social anthropologist who did fieldwork among the Mende in 1945-1946. Topics include kinship and political organization, family life and organization of farming, puberty, initiation and secret societies. Also included is a 1936 Ph.D. dissertation by Jules Staub which describes Mende material culture. Melissa Leach discusses gender relations in Mende communities living around a state forest reserve. She focuses on differences in women's and men's experiences around the forest. Barry Isaac documents the gradual shift from subsistence rice cultivation to commercial cocoa, coffee and palm trees growing. The works of Caroline Bledsoe focus on dynamics of gender among polygamous Mende households. An article analyzes lineage meetings and in-group struggles to explore salient features of Mende political culture

    Inhalt: Linking environmental sustainability with poverty reduction and social justice, and making science and technology work for the poor, have become central practical, political and moral challenges of our times. These must be met in a world of rapid, interconnected change in environments, societies and economies, and globalised, fragmented governance arrangements. Yet despite growing international attention and investment, policy attempts often fail. Why is this, and what can be done about it? How might we understand and address emergent threats from epidemic disease, or the challenges of water scarcity in dryland India? In the context of climate change, how might seed systems help African farmers meet their needs, and how might appropriate energy strategies be developed? This book lays out a new 'pathways approach' to address sustainability challenges such as these in today's dynamic world. Through an appreciation of dynamics, complexity, uncertainty, differing narratives and the values-based aims of sustainability, the pathways approach allows us to see how some approaches are dominant, even though they do not produce the desired results, and how to create successful alternative 'pathways' of responding to the challenges we face. As well as offering new ways of thinking about sustainability, the book also suggests a series of practical ways forward - in tools and methods, forms of political engagement, and styles of knowledge-making and communication. Throughout the book, the practicalities of the pathways approach are illustrated using four case studies: water in dryland India, agricultural seeds in Africa, responses to epidemic disease and energy systems/climate change. Published in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

    Inhalt: This book explores how parents understand and engage with childhood vaccination in contrasting global contexts. This rapidly advancing and universal technology has sparked dramatic controversy, whether over MMR in the UK or oral polio vaccines in Nigeria. Combining a fresh anthropological perspective with detailed field research, the book examines anxieties emerging as highly globalized vaccine technologies and technocracies encounter the deeply intimate personal and social worlds of parenting and childcare, and how these are part of transforming science-society relations. It retheorizes anxieties about technologies, integrating bodily, social and wider political dimensions, and challenges common views of ignorance, risk, trust and rumour -- and related dichotomies between Northern risk society and Southern developing society -- that dominate current scientific and policy debates. In so doing, the book reflects critically on the stereotypes that at times pass for explanations of public engagement with both routine vaccination and vaccine research. It suggests routes to improved dialogue between health professionals and the people they serve, and new ways to address science-society relations in a globalized world
