Content: "In the law of armed conflicts, one of the elements that has changed the most has been the means and methods of warfare. Yet there are few legal answers for the many questions these changes pose. This volume, therefore, seeks to identify the limitations of current international law on this double plane, the means and methods of combat, and to offer insights about how to address them. Topics include the use of nuclear energy, which without being a weapon, can have the same effect as one, chemical and biological weapons, autonomous artificial intelligence weapons, and biobots. Similarly, fake news, the hostile use of cyberspace, lawfare, the use of big data, terrorism as a combat method, premeditated poisoning, sexual humiliation, the impact of such news on the armed forces and the reorganization needed to face the new scenarios are all situations not contemplated in classical law and which require new legal and operational responses"--

Content: Klappentext: This work represents an analysis of and a reflection on the new challenges of humanitarian law in armed conflicts. It covers the jurisprudential dimension not only of the International Court of Justice, but also all the different legal bodies, including the ad hoc tribunals created by the United Nations. It analyses the purely doctrinal dimension of general aspects such as the solutions to world disorder in this field, the relationship between jus in bello and jus ad bellum, the principles of universal and international jurisdiction, and the notion of justice and peace. More concrete aspects include the situation of foreigners and journalists in armed conflicts, terrorist acts in terms of international humanitarian law and sexual violence as a war crime. Despite the range of themes addressed, they are all linked with the essential theme of the book, The New Challenges of Humanitarian Law in Armed Conflicts.

Content: "As the leading legal historian of his generation in Canada and professor at McGill University for thirty-five years, Blaine Baker (1952–2018) was known for his unique personality, teaching style, intellectual cosmopolitanism, and deep commitment to the place of Canadian legal history in the curriculum of law faculties. Written by fifteen historians, Law, Life, and the Teaching of Legal History examines important themes in Canadian legal history through the prism of Baker’s career. A first group of essays discusses Baker’s own research, his influence within McGill’s law faculty, his complex personality, and the relationship between the private and the public in the life of a university intellectual at the turn of the twenty-first century. Additional essays, inspired by topics Baker took up in his own writing, use Baker’s broad interests in legal culture to reflect on fundamental themes across Canadian legal history, including legal education, gender and race, technology, nation building and national identity, criminal law and marginalized populations, and constitutionalism. Law, Life, and the Teaching of Legal History offers contemporary analysis of Canadian legal history and thoughtfully engages with what it means to honour one individual’s enduring legacy in the study of law."--
