Content: "Over the last several decades, technology has emerged as an important area of interest for both philosophers and theologians. Yet, despite his status as one of modernity's seminal thinkers, Søren Kierkegaard is not often seen as one who contributed to the field. Kierkegaard and the Question Concerning Technology argues otherwise. Christopher B. Barnett shows that many of Kierkegaard's criticisms of "the present age" relate to the increasing dominance of technology in the West, and he puts Kierkegaard's thought in conversation with subsequent thinkers who grappled with technological issues, from Martin Heidegger to Thomas Merton. Barnett shows that Kierkegaard's writing, with its marked emphases on personal "upbuilding," stands as a place where deeper, non-technical modes of thinking are both commended and nurtured. In doing so, Barnett presents a Kierkegaard who remains relevant--perhaps all too relevant--in today's digital age."--Bloomsbury publishing
Content: A general history of technology -- Technology in golden age Denmark -- Kierkegaard on the rise of technological culture -- Kierkegaard's analysis of information technology -- From Hegel to Google: Kierkegaard and the perils of the system -- Kierkegaard and the question concerning technology.

Content: The banking and finance sectors are relevant shares of modern economies and indeed drivers of growth in emerging economies. The majority of existing economic and finance textbooks focus on concepts and theories with briefly exposited real-world examples for illustration. This book, which collects chapters that are the contributions of the acknowledged experts in their fields, fills this gap by featuring in-depth analyses on prominent real-world topics in banking and finance. The book's applications of econometrics present insightful perspectives on the recent development of banking issues, stock market contagion, the impact of internet technology (IT) on stock markets, financial innovation and technology firms, and an international perspective on the loan puzzle and interest rate adjustment in emerging markets. In addition to exhaustive case studies on banking and finance in India, Hong Kong, Japan, and other Asian emerging markets, the authors coherently contribute an intellectual advancement of contemporary issues in banking and finance literature. The authors offer an essential reading and source of reference for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate courses in economics and finance.

Content: ISETE 24 analyses monetary policies and central bank actions in the context of the recent global financial crisis. Part 1 discusses standard monetary policies and inflation targeting rules. Those approaches were appropriate to reaching two main objectives during the great moderation: controlling inflation and accommodating economic growth. But the end of the great moderation revealed the inadequacy of such monetary policies during the rapid development of financial and credit markets. Speculative bubbles, revealing financial instabilities, resulted in a credit crunch, a global financial crisis, and economic depression for major economies. Part II focuses on the non-conventional monetary policies introduced recently by several central banks. New monetary rules and variations in these rules are documented. Besides the well-known targets of monetary policy (inflation, unemployment, and economic growth), these new rules often target asset prices to moderate the development of financial markets and the volatility of financial cycles. ISETE 24 also investigates the effects of non-conventional monetary policies on developing and emerging economies and issues of alternative finance.

Content: In business, does it pay to be good? Drawing from two decades of published conceptual and empirical scholarship, this book outlines the mechanisms of the business case for corporate social responsibility and demonstrates the conditions that cause good corporate acts to succeed, or fail, in turning a profit. Central to the explanation is the role of stakeholders, who are portrayed as agents who can turn corporate ""good into gold"" but lack the capacity to do so consistently. This book takes a critical perspective, noting significant limits on the ability of stakeholders to reward good corporat

Content: Scorsese and Religion concerns the religious vision of the great American filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Not only will this volume explore the foundation of Scorsese’s interest in religion—namely, his relation to the Catholic Church—but it will also highlight the religious breadth of Scorsese’s corpus. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that Scorsese’s cinematic “re-presentation” of reality brings together various religious influences (Catholicism, existentialism, Buddhism, etc.) and topics such as violence, morality, nihilism, and so on. The overarching claim is that Scorsese, who indeed once claimed that his “whole life” had been “movies and religion,” cannot be properly understood without reflecting on the ways in which his religious interests are expressed in and through his art
