Content: This book assesses the problem of defining exclusion, highlights the need for its contextualisation and establishes a relationship between social exclusion, deprivation and discrimination. It studies the complex mosaic of Indian systems and society, marked with exclusionary practices and structures on the basis of caste. It presents grassroots level information through empirical investigations and studies how physical spaces become sites of exclusion when borders become volatile. Scholars put together their diverse research, studies, perceptions and ideas and, most importantly, their years of expertise to focus on a central theme of social exclusion in Indian society. They study the role of the state as an interventionist force and look into the political mobilisation strategy as a reaction to exclusion. The book also takes a critical look at the reservation policy and argues that state intervention creates certain new forms of exclusion

Content: The work is an attempt to understand the existence of multiple non-state legal traditions despite the presence of a uniform legal system in India. There is a significant gap that exists between the state-legal system and the practices and preferences of people belonging to different communities. In order to understand this structure, the text goes back to the history of legal system in India and tries to identify the reason behind the prevalence of these alternative modes. It studies some prominent legal systems of pre-colonial India like the Mughals, and further explores the way Indian legality was transformed during the British rule. The study maps the evolution and growth of the common law system in India and takes into account the factors that contributed to the strengthening and acceptance of this system.

Series Statement: Cambridge studies in comparative politics
Content: "Why are some places in the world characterized by better social service provision and welfare outcomes than others? In a world in which millions of people, particularly in developing countries, continue to lead lives plagued by illiteracy and ill-health, understanding the conditions that promote social welfare is of critical importance to political scientists and policy makers alike. Drawing on a multi-method study, from the late nineteenth century to the present, of the stark variations in educational and health outcomes within a large, federal, multiethnic developing country - India - this book develops an argument for the power of collective identity as an impetus for state prioritization of social welfare. Such an argument not only marks an important break from the dominant negative perceptions of identity politics but also presents a novel theoretical framework to understand welfare provision"...

Content: Gandhi and Nehru helped create a myth of nonviolence in ancient India that obscures a troubled, complex heritage: a long struggle to reconcile the ethics of nonviolence with the need to use violence to rule. Upinder Singh documents the tension between violence and nonviolence in ancient Indian political thought and practice, 600 BCE to 600 CE.

Content: Recent sedition cases registered in India show that the law in its wide and diverse deployment was used against agitators in a community-based pro-reservation movement, a group of university students for their alleged 'anti-national' statements, and also against the anti-liquor activists and anti-nuclear movements, to name a few. Examining the relationship between sedition and liberal democracies, particularly in India, this book looks at the biography of sedition laws, its contradictory position against free speech and democratic ethics.
