Inhalt: "The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic -- at the interlocking levels of politics, economy, and society -- have been different across regions, states, and societies. In the case of the Middle East and North Africa, which was already in the throes of intense tumult following the onset of the 2011 Arab Spring, COVID's blows have on the one hand followed the trajectory of some global patterns, while at the same time playing out in regionally specific ways. Based on empirical country-level analysis, this volume brings together an international team of contributors seeking to untangle how COVID-19 unfolds across the MENA. There is special reference to issues of (self) governance and democracy, and the enormous challenges heightened by the pandemic in many Arab settings: inequality, human indignity and resurgent authoritarianism. The analyses are framed through Ulrich Beck's famous concept of "risk society" that pinpointed the negative consequences of modernity and its unbridled capitalism, and the book traces how this has come home in full force in the COVID-19 pandemic. The editors, Larbi Sadiki and Layla Saleh, use the term "Arab risk society" to refer to the short-term and long-term repercussions on Arab societies across the areas of socio-economic inequality, a revitalized state that is more securitized than ever before, and the relentless democratic aspirations and civic-political freedoms. But the analyses are attuned to problem-solving research. The "ethnographies of the pandemic" included in this book investigate transformations and coping mechanisms within each country case study and provide an ethically-informed research praxis that can respond to the manifold crises crashing down upon Arab states and societies."--

Serie: Cambridge elements. Elements in religion and monotheism,
Inhalt: Avicenna believes that God must be understood in the first place as the Necessary Existent (wâǧib al-wuǧûd). In his various works, he provides different versions of an ingenious argument for the existence of the Necessary Existent-the so-called Proof of the Sincere (burhân al-ṣiddîqîn)-and argues that all the properties that are usually attributed to God can be extracted merely from God's having necessary existence. Considering the centrality of tawḥîd to Islam, the first thing Avicenna tries to extract from God's necessary existence is God's oneness. The aim of the present Element is to provide a detailed discussion of Avicenna's arguments for the existence and unity of God. Through this project, the author hopes to clarify how, for Avicenna, the Islamic concept of monotheism is intertwined with the concept of essential existence.

Inhalt: Larbi Sadiki and Layla Saleh present extensive local evidence to demonstrate that popular resistance has been a mainstay of modern Tunisia before, during, and after colonialism. Protest makes peoplehood, and peoplehood makes protest: neither is self-contained. The book explores the rich history and diversity of insurrectionary politics in Tunisia from the onset of protests in the 1960s up to the 2011 Arab Spring revolution and beyond, exploring bottom-up activism (hirak) and revolution (thawrah). The six protestscapes presented (unions, student activists, the phosphate uprising, the 2010-11 revolution, Kamour, and football ultras) offer a novel way of examining partial 'moving snapshots' that are crucial to understanding revolution.

Inhalt: Hazardous waste has been defined as waste that is either in a solid, liquid, or gas form, which contributes significantly to serious irreversible or incapacitating reversible illnesses and poses a potential hazard to human health or the environment, depending on its quantity, concentration, and physical, chemical, or infectious characteristics. Hazardous waste risk assessment is a quantitative means of assessing the potential adverse effects of exposure on human health.Management of hazardous waste is a very important process for saving the environment and human life. Traditional and innovative techniques for the treatment and solidification of hazardous waste make for interesting research and study. Proper storage of hazardous waste ensures proper segregation of waste, separation of incompatible wastes, easy access to wastes, reasonable protection against vandalism, and adequate secondary containment. Hazardous wastes are generally stored in different modified containers, including drums and tanks. Prevention or minimization of hazardous waste and improving control methods are introduced as risk management options. Many countries, including developing countries, have taken steps in the right direction to minimize and manage hazardous waste, not only by cleaning up contaminated sites, but also by controlling and reducing the generation of hazardous wastes
