Die Debatte über Daniel J. Goldhagens Buch "Hitlers willige Vollstrecker" sowie die Reaktionen auf die Ausstellung "Vernichtungskrieg. Verbrechen der Wehrmacht" haben erstmals umfassend Fragen nach den Tätern der Shoah aufgeworfen. Handelte es sich bei ihnen um radikalisierte Desperados, wie etwa Eugen Kogon unmittelbar nach dem Krieg vermutete, um "ganz normale Männer" (Christopher Browning) oder um fanatisierte Nationalsozialisten, die einem "eliminatorischen Antisemitismus" huldigten? Hatte sich die wissenschaftliche Forschung in den vergangenen fünf Jahrzehnten eher am Rande und spekulativ mit solchen Fragen beschäftigt, ist in den vergangenen fünf Jahren eine breite und fundierte Täterforschung in Gang gekommen. Erste gesicherte Erkenntnisse zeigen, daß der Kreis der Täter die Kerngruppen des Nationalsozialismus weit überschritt und auch ausländische Kollaborateure einschloß.
