Als man ihr das rechte Bein amputierte, soll sie während der Operation die Marseillaise gesungen haben. Zu einem Leben außerhalb der Norm bestimmt, brach "la divine Sarah", wie man sie in Frankreich nannte, alle Theaterregeln des 19. Jahrhunderts und ebnete so den Künstlern des 20.
