Uniform Title: Brother nation or lost colony? - Examining the Dutch Stamverwantschap movement and its rediscovery of the Dutch-Africans, 1847 to 1900
Content: Were the Dutch-Africans in southern Africa a brother nation to the Dutch or did they simply represent a lost colony? Connecting primary sources in Dutch and Afrikaans, this work tells the story of the Dutch stamverwantschap (kinship) movement between 1847 and 1900. The white Dutch-Africans were imagined to be the bridgehead to a broader Dutch identity – a ‘second Netherlands’ in the south. This study explores how the 19th century Dutch identified with and idealised a pastoral community operating within a racially segregated society on the edge of European civilisation. When the stamverwantschap dream collided with British military and economic power, the belief that race, language and religion could sustain a broader Dutch identity proved to be an illusion

Content: This thesis takes as its object of study the whole of Gherasim Luca's literary output. Each stage of his Iiterary career is examined with regard to its specific context, from his poetic beginnings in 1930, as young recruit of avant-garde circIes in Bucharest, through the following period when Luca questioned the possibiIity of a "proletarian" literature and the surrealist experience itself, to his last published "ontophoniques" poems. My contribution is continuous with previous work on the work and life of Luca but it both enriches and modifies significantly earlier scholarship in the areas of biography, bibliography, and textual analysis. The fundamental, guiding, methdological principles of my study are: 1) to historicize Luca's literary works written in French and Romanian (i.e., to examine the dynamic of his texts in their historical context and chronology); 2) to make systematic use of unpublished documents (especially those located in the "Gherasim Luca Archive" in the "Bibliothèque Jacques Doucet" in Paris) ; 3) to carry out a careful and close analysis of Luca's Romanian texts. My contribution is original in that it makes Luca's work accessible to readers who do not know Romanian. I also place particular emphasis on elucidating the genesis of the poet's writings. This is necessary because this dimension has been neglected in the work of previous critics

Content: This study examines the significance and the deployment of fluid imagery in the composition, narration, and recollection of organised thought in the High Middle Ages through a blend of environmental and intellectual history. This volume provides a new contribution to the understanding of twelfth-century monasticism and medieval intellectual culture by exploring the relationship between water and the composition of thought. It provides a fresh insight into twelfth-century monastic philosophies by studying the use of water as an abstract entity in medieval thought to frame and discuss topics such as spirituality, the natural order, knowledge visualization, and metaphysics in various high medieval texts, including Godfrey of Saint-Victor's 'Fons Philosophiae', Peter of Celle's letter corpus, and the 'Description of Clairvaux'
