"Die dominikanische Zeitschrift 'L'Art Sacré' steht stärker als jede andere ihrer Zeit für die Sehnsucht nach einem neuen, radikal modernen Ausdruck christlicher Frömmigkeit, nach neuen Räumen und neuen Bildern für die Christen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dafür knüpften die Herausgeber Kontakte weit über Frankreich hinaus, insbesondere in die Schweiz und nach Deutschland, beobachteten aber auch Entwicklungen weltweit. Berühmt wurde 'L'Art Sacré' mit dem sogenannten 'Appel aux grands', ein Aufruf an die führenden Künstler der Moderne, sich mit religiöser Kunst zu befassen. Der Appel wurde von Le Corbusier gehört, der mit dem spektakulärsten Kirchenbau der frühen Nachkriegszeit - der Wallfahrtskirche Notre-Dame du Haut in Ronchamp - den modernen Kirchenbau zu einer Leitgattung der modernen Architektur machte. Der Appel aux grands wurde aber vor allem von avantgardistischen Bildhauern und Malern gehört (von Bazaine, Chagall, Léger, Lurçat, Manessier, Matisse, Picasso, Richier, Rouault, u. a.), die - unabhängig von ihrem persönlichen religiösen Bekenntnis oder Nichtbekenntnis - für die Ausstattung christlicher Sakralräume gewonnen werden konnten"-- Back cover
