Content: Criminal Law: The Basics is an insightful introduction to the legal aspects of criminal acts, ranging from battery to burglary and harassment to homicide. Starting with an in-depth exploration of the very concept of crime, the book considers key questions such as: How should we decide what is criminal and what isn't? What is the difference between murder and manslaughter? Could you ever be guilty of stealing your own property? What defences are available to those accused of crime? Featuring a range of case studies, from the infamous to the bizarre, the new edition has been thoroughly updated to include new material on loss of control, accessorial liability, dishonesty, causation, liability, manslaughter and sexual offences. Relevant cases, statutes and suggestions for further reading are included throughout, making Criminal Law: The Basics the ideal starting point for anyone studying this area for the first time.

Series Statement: The law in context series
Content: This book promotes a relational understanding of the self. It explores how law can be transformed by focusing on the promotion and protection of caring relationships, rather than individual rights. This offers a radical and profound re-imagining of what law is about and what it should be trying to do. It moves from the theoretical into offering practical examples of how the law could be developed to enhance relationships, rather than undermine them.

Content: Domestic Abuse and Human Rights presents an overview of the relevance of the European Convention on Human Rights to domestic abuse. It will have three aims: first, to consider the relevant case law and application of the key articles to questions around domestic abuse; second, to consider at a theoretical level the balancing between protection and autonomy at the heart of the legal response to domestic abuse; third, to propose practical application of a human rights approach to issues around domestic abuse, with particular emphasis placed on the significance of the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combatting Violence against Women. The relevance of the key Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights will be explained. The book will include material on the definition of domestic abuse, elder abuse, parental abuse, and the impact of abuse on children. It seeks to bring out the themes which connect these issues as well as the ways in which they raise distinct questions. The book argues that a human rights approach requires states to take a pro-active stance towards domestic abuse. It should no longer be regarded as a private matter, but as a human rights approach mandating state intervention, although within limits. So understood, the European Convention on Human Rights provides a powerful impetus for states to ensure an effective response to the major problem of domestic abuse.

Content: Introduction / Camilla Pickles and Jonathan Herring -- Non-consented vaginal examinations : the birthrights and AIMS perspective / Rebecca Brione -- Silence, acquiescence or consent : interpreting women's responses to intimate examinations / Elsa Montgomery -- Female genital examination and autonomy in medicine / Neda Taghinejadi and Brenda Kelly -- When a uterus enters the room, reason goes out the window / Stella Villarmea -- Human rights and gender stereotypes in childbirth / Christina Zampas -- How should the performance of periparturient vaginal examinations be regulated? / Charles Foster -- Including the victim's perspective : can vaginal examinations ever be sexual assaults? / Catarina Sjölin -- When 'battery' is not enough : exposing the gaps in unauthorised vaginal examinations during labour as a crime of battery / Camilla Pickles -- Implied consent and vaginal examination in pregnancy / Jonathan Herring -- Troubling consent : pain and pressure in labour and childbirth / Claire Murray -- Redressing unauthorised vaginal examinations through litigation / Andrea Mulligan.
Content: "This is the first book to unpack the legal and ethical issues surrounding unauthorised intimate examinations during labour. The book uses feminist, socio-legal and philosophical tools to explore the issues of power, vulnerability and autonomy. The collection challenges the perception that the law adequately addresses different manifestations of unauthorised medical touch through the lens of women's experiences of unauthorised vaginal examinations during labour. The book unearths several broader themes that are of huge significance to lawyers and healthcare professionals such as the legal status of women and their bodies. The book raises questions about women's experiences during childbirth in hospital settings. It explores the status of women's bodies during labour and childbirth where too easily they become objectified, and it raises important issues around consent. The book highlights links to the law on sexual offences and women's loss of power under the medical gaze. The book includes contributions from leading feminist philosophers, medical professionals, and academics in medicine and law, and offers pioneering analysis relevant to lawyers and healthcare professionals with an interest in medical law and ethics; feminist theory; criminal law; tort law; and human rights law"--

Content: "This book argues that suicidal people have the right to receive treatment and for reasonable steps to be taken that they are protected from killing themselves. Those suffering threats to life from mental health issues deserve the same protection as those who face threats to life from ill health or violence from others. The book explores the ethical and legal case for giving those beset with suicidal thoughts the treatment they need and for reasonable steps to be taken to prevent them attempting suicide. Debates around suicide tend to be dominated by cases involving those with terminal medical conditions seeking assisted dying. But of those wishing to die, it is far more common to find middle aged men and young people oppressed by mental health and personal problems. Too often the woeful failure in the funding of mental health services in the UK means that suicidal people are denied the support and help they desperately need. This ground-breaking book makes the legal and ethical case for recognising that the state and public authorities have a duty to provide and implement an effective suicide prevention strategy."--
