Inhalt: The field of disability studies significantly contributes to contemporary discussions of the marginalization of and social justice for individuals with disabilities. However, what of disability in the past? The Medieval Disability Sourcebook: Western Europe explores what medieval texts have to say about disability, both in their own time and for the present. This interdisciplinary volume on medieval Europe combines historical records, medical texts, and religious accounts of saints' lives and miracles, as well as poetry, prose, drama, and manuscript images to demonstrate the varied and complicated attitudes medieval societies had about disability. Far from recording any monolithic understanding of disability in the Middle Ages, these contributions present a striking range of voices--to, from, and about those with disabilities--and such diversity only confirms how disability permeated (and permeates) every aspect of life. The Medieval Disability Sourcebook is designed for use inside the undergraduate or graduate classroom or by scholars interested in learning more about medieval Europe as it intersects with the field of disability studies. Most texts are presented in modern English, though some are preserved in Middle English and many are given in side-by-side translations for greater study. Each entry is prefaced with an academic introduction to disability within the text as well as a bibliography for further study. This sourcebook is the first in a proposed series focusing on disability in a wide range of premodern cultures, histories, and geographies.

Inhalt: This is a collection of practical suggestions which dates from the XVIth century. In this work, Bernard Palissy examines the questions of agriculture, architecture and science with the imagination and curiosity of a poet.

Inhalt: This episode of the Green Interview features British lawyer Mumta Ito, who began her career as a high-powered corporate lawyer, working in the heart of the city of London""Britain's equivalent to Wall Street. She was advising investment banks, multinational corporations and governments on large-scale, complex class actions. She was very successful until she found herself questioning the human value of her work. During a leave of absence, she experienced a profound spiritual transformation and joined the entourage of Amma, one of India's foremost teachers, healers and humanitarians. Using her legal training to serve her new spiritual consciousness, she set up a successful environmental organization in the Virgin Islands, which lead her to challenge the whole relationship between human law and the laws of nature. She founded the International Centre for Wholistic Law in Scotland, and she is now engaged in a European Citizens' Initiative designed to change the world by embedding the rights of Mother Earth in the legal system of the 28-nation European Union.

Inhalt: Interview with David Boyd, a Canadian ecological lawyer and leading environmental expert who is a forceful advocate for the entrenchment of environmental rights in national legal systems. Boyd is the author of five books and his two most recent books demonstrate how Canada and other nations can use constitutional and environmental law to help the environment and improve people's lives. For example, court decisions and environmental laws in Argentina, Brazil, India, the Philippines, Norway, Sweden, and Finland prove that constitutional protections lead to concrete changes such as cleaner air, safer drinking water and less pollution. Boyd argues that enshrining the right to a healthy environment in national constitutions can dramatically transform countries' environmental laws and policies and improve their practices of protecting the environment. Yet a handful of nations, including Canada and the U.S., have no such constitutional protections. Boyd aims to change that.

Inhalt: Interview with John Borrows, one of Canada's most prolific and celebrated legal scholars and a professor of law at the University of Minnesota. Borrows, who is Anishinaabe and a member of the Cape Croker First Nation in Ontario's Bruce Peninsula, has written and spoken widely on aboriginal legal rights and traditions, treaties and land claims, and religion and the law. He points out that the treaties are two-way agreements that affect the rights of both indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians - and they were meant to guide the relationships between the two groups forever. They granted rights to people on both sides, but they imposed obligations too. And those obligations and rights can help us live peacefully with each other and with nature. In this Green Interview, Borrows offers a bracing vision of what law really is, where it finds its roots and its authority, and how aboriginal law fits into the Canadian legal fabric.
