    Content: Der amerikanische Medienexperte und Kulturkritiker beklagt eine Verflachung der öffentlichen Erziehung und versucht eine Antwort auf die Frage: Wozu sind Schulen da?
    Content: Rez.: Durch fulminante Streitschriften wie "Das Verschwinden der Kindheit" (BA 10/83; 1/94) und "Wir amüsieren uns zu Tode" (BA 2/86) bekanntgeworden, nimmt sich der amerikanische Medienökologe, der seine Laufbahn als Grundschullehrer in Brooklyn begann, diesmal die Schulerziehung vor. Nach seiner Ansicht hat sie keine Zukunft, sofern es der Gesellschaft nicht gelingt, sich über Werte und Ziele zu verständigen (Konsumismus und Technizismus sind in Postmans Augen falsche Götter). Im 2. und wichtigeren Teil seines Buches formuliert er Leitideen, die Lehrer, Schüler und Eltern inspirieren könnten (vorab: Verantwortung für das "Raumschiff Erde"). Ein bemerkenswerter Appell, bei dem am Ende die Hoffnung stärker scheint als der kulturkritische Impetus; auch Postmans Witz war schon mal sarkastischer. Trotz durchgängiger US-Perspektive auch hierzulande von Interesse (ebenso wie H. Gieseckes eher gegensätzliche Schlußfolgerungen: vgl. BA 8/85). (2) (Erich H. Wurster)
