Giacomo Leopardis (1798-1837) Poetik und Schreibweise ist eine Antwort auf die politischen, ökonomischen, wissenschaftlichen und kulturellen Veränderungen, die seit dem Ausbruch der Französischen Revolution in Europa eingetreten sind. Leopardi zufolge unterminieren Vernunft und Wissenschaft den Lebensdrang des Menschen oder sein Verlangen nach zeitlich und räumlich unbegrenztem Glück. Das Verlangen, zu leben und glücklich zu sein, kann nur als Erinnerung an die Wahrnehmungsfähigkeit der Kindheit gestillt werden: Sich der Vergangenheit zu erinnern, bedeutet, ein unmögliches zukünftiges Glück zu suchen. Während des Schreibens oder Dichtens fühlt sich das Ich dem wirklichen Leben, nämlich Leid und Gewalt, entrückt und findet in seinem Gedächtnis die Vorstellung des Unendlichen, des Glücks. Die Kulturkritik Leopardis und sein Konzept der ästhetischen Autonomie werden mit zwei Gedichten erläutert: "Il risorgimento" und "Palinodia al marchese Gino Capponi". Der italienische Dichter, ein Schüler der französischen Aufklärung, hat versucht, die Folgen der "Rationalisierung" oder der "Entzauberung der Welt" zu entzaubern.
