Content: The government of New Zealand delegates property expenditure decisions to each individual school. Such a decentralised environment creates a challenge for school boards and principals to obtain advice on the complex issues around designing schools. To inform schools, the Ministry of Education provides numerous publications related to design and selected best practice samples via its website.

Content: On Theology: Herman Bavinck's Academic Orations presents four previously untranslated works by Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). These works offer important insights into Bavinck's conceptualisation of the discipline of theology, its place in the modern university, and the relation in which theology stands to religion. In the introductory essay, Bruce R. Pass draws attention to the way these speeches shed light on the development of Bavinck's thought across his tenure at the Kampen Theological School and the Free University of Amsterdam as well as the complex relationship in which Bavinck's thought stands to that of Friedrich Schleiermacher.

Content: Feeding the world's growing population in ways that are effective, ethical and socially just, and protect the natural systems on which all life depends is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. It forms the theme of this book of papers of the 2022 Edinburgh conference of the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EURSAFE). The dramatic increases in the cost of energy, scarcities in resources and people, stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and international conflict, have brought home the vulnerability of our interlinked human systems at all levels. Climate change poses deeper longer term threats. Global competition drives fine-tuned and efficient systems, but time-proven local practices may show better resilience in such uncertain futures. The book reflects the sheer diversity of approaches and responses to these challenges, across a wide range of academic disciplines, provoking us to look at the issues in new ways. They reflect the varied standpoints of producers, retailers, regulators, farmers, vets, communities and citizens. The challenge to reach net zero carbon is addressed in papers assessing livestock systems, grasslands, land use and 'rewilding', food choices, meat eating and alternatives. Innovations such as genome editing, uses of seaweed and the use of data pose both possibilities and challenges. Animal ethics is a prominent theme, with a range of papers on animal-human relations, animal use in research and veterinary ethics.

Content: Taking as a starting point the embeddedness of all disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry - since interdisciplinarity is itself not a unitary phenomenon but encompasses many different knowledge practices embedded in widely differing political, economic and ideological constituencies - the essays in this volume explore in different ways some of the conversations currently taking place across disciplinary boundaries in the exciting new field of literature and science. Like literature, science is seen as a site of competing ideological constructions, as a complex (and richly ambiguous) element of modern (and postmodern) social discourse, circulating in a wider cultural community where its currency fluctuates according to complex changes in social and epistemic conditions, including the relative prestige or cultural capital of 'science' (or 'literature') within professional and disciplinary hierarchies at any given time.

Content: This is an example of an architect working with future school users in Iceland to design their school. The architect has developed a process that he uses with students, staff and the local community to create a learning environment in which the design intends for freedom and creativity to be integrated into the students’ daily learning experiences. The school to be built, called Ingunnarskoli, aspires to be a place for learning that is based on the needs of children, their families and their community.

Content: The New Zealand Ministry of Education is undertaking a project to provide information that can assist schools to design quality environments that will improve student learning outcomes. The project started in 2004 with the ministry surveying boards of trustees, principals, teachers and students on what features of property design they believed were important to support students’ learning. As part of this project the ministry is identifying current design standards that need to be followed and publishing examples of best practice in design solutions. The objective of this is to encourage schools to network and learn from each other’s experience.
