Inhalt: Kaum jemand kennt die Vorgänger der sowjetischen Industriefotografie. Dieses Buch nimmt erstmals diese Aufnahmen in den Fokus und zeichnet nach, welche Rolle der Industrie und den Fabriken in den Bildwelten des Zarenreichs zugedacht war. Industriefotografien eröffneten Außenstehenden einen Blick hinter russische Fabriktore. Damit prägten sie in Alben, Fest und Zeitschriften sowie auf Postkarten das Bild von Fabriken in der russischen Gesellschaft. An den Schnittstellen von Fotografie, Industrie, Technik und visueller Geschichte analysiert die Autorin erstmals, wie sich die Industriefotografie im Zarenreich entwickelte und welche Botschaften über Industrialisierung und Fabriken die an der Herstellung und Verbreitung der neuen Bilder beteiligten Akteure mit den Aufnahmen vermittelten. Vergleiche mit Studien aus Frankreich, Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA stellen die russische Fabrikfotografie in einen größeren Kontext und verdeutlichen, dass weniger von einer nationalen als von einer europäisch/nordamerikanischen Bildsprache gesprochen werden muss.

Inhalt: This inter- and multi-disciplinary volume examines various experiences of loss, whether we encounter it in the form of lost loved ones, lost relationships, lost opportunities or the loss of capabilities as we age. Loss is something we can experience personally, as part of a family, and as part of a community whose collective experiences of loss occasions more public displays of commemoration. We are constantly challenged to find ways of coping and surviving in the face of different types of loss. Due in part to the complexities of the concept itself and the resistance many individuals feel toward discussing painful subjects, it is often difficult to engage in the sort of robust, inter-disciplinary dialogue that is needed to explore fully the links between living, suffering, dying, and surviving loss. Thus, this volume is profoundly interdisciplinary, as it explores how loss can be expressed through cognitive, affective, somatic, behavioral/interpersonal, and spiritual grief responses.

Inhalt: Many types of tradition and interpretation found in later Jewish and Christian writings trace their origins to the Second Temple period, but their transmission and transformation followed different paths within the two religious communities. For example, while Christians often translated and transmitted discrete Second Temple texts, rabbinic Judaism generally preserved earlier traditions integrated into new literary frameworks. In both cases, ancient traditions were often transformed to serve new purposes but continued to bear witness to their ancient roots. Later compositions may even provide the key to clarifying obscurities in earlier texts. The contributions in this volume explore the dynamics by which earlier texts and traditions were transmitted and transformed in these later bodies of literature and their attendant cultural contexts.

Inhalt: The last century of scholarship on the Old Testament citations in the Gospel of John has concentrated almost exclusively upon source-critical or redaction-critical issues with the aim of determining the Christological import of the citations. The current book brings a narrative-rhetorical methodology to bear upon the seven explicit Scriptural citations in the Gospel's 'Book of Signs' (1:19-12:50) that are prefaced by a distinct introductory formula (1:19-12:15). These citations are each addressed to, or imply, a particular textual audience, namely, 'the Jews'. This book argues that as such the citations do not merely have Christological significance but function at the narrative level to encourage an ideal reader to construct a particularly negative characterization of 'the Jews'.

This illustrated volume, for the first time, collects together vivid - and predominantly first-hand - impressions of the country recorded by nearly two hundred British travellers and other commentators, including Thomas Malthus, Charlotte Brontë, Lord Tennyson, and William Gladstone. In a rich selection of travel writing, fiction, poetry, journalism, political speeches, and art, Norway emerges as a refreshingly natural utopia, happily free from her imperial neighbour's increasing problems with the side-effects of industrialisation. This is a fascinating examination of the people, institutions, customs, language and environment of Norway seen through the eyes of the British. Using the tools of literary and historical scholarship, Fjågesund and Symes set these perceptions in their nineteenth-century context, throwing light on such issues as progress, art and aesthetics, democracy, religion, nationhood, race, class, and gender, all of which occupied Europe at the time.
