Content: It is widely agreed that Protestant scholasticism influenced Kant's thinking on the question of Divine Providence. But the nature and extent of that influence have never been explored in detail. This is the scholarly lacuna the present volume seeks to fill. It shows how Kant, from his pre-Critical period onward, grappled with the concept of Divine Providence, sought to subjectivize and naturalize it, and how Protestant scholasticism played an important role, both positive and negative, in this endeavor. It also makes clear how this critical philosophical conversation gave rise to a powerful notion of the progress of the human species - a vital part of the Enlightenment's enduring legacy. This study thus provides not only a unique theological-philosophical overview of 18th-century speculation on the question of Divine Providence; it also sheds important new light on the significance of the German Enlightenment.

Content: Destruction of temples and their transformation into churches are central symbols of late antique change in religious environment, socio-political system, and public perception. Contemporaries were aware of these events' far-reaching symbolic significance and of their immediate impact as demonstrations of political power and religious conviction. Joined in any "temple-destruction" are the meaning of the monument, actions taken, and subsequent literary discourse. Paradigms of perception, specific interests, and forms of expression of quite various protagonists clashed. Archaeologists, historians, and historians of religion illuminate "temple-destruction" from different perspectives, analysing local configurations within larger contexts, both regional and imperial, in order to find an appropriate larger perspective on this phenomenon within the late antique movement "from temple to church".

Content: In der deutschen Erinnerungskultur ist die Novemberrevolution von 1918/19 heute kaum noch präsent. Die zahlreichen Romane, die dieses Ereignis thematisieren und von denen einige bei ihrem Erscheinen auf große Resonanz stießen, sind inzwischen ebenfalls überwiegend in Vergessenheit geraten und haben auch in der Literaturwissenschaft wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Der vorliegende Band möchte diese Forschungslücke schließen. Er bietet Einzelinterpretationen zu 19 einschlägigen Werken, die als Versuche aufgefasst werden, jeweils spezifische, von parteilichen Interessen geprägte Versionen des historischen Geschehens mit literarischen Mitteln im kollektiven Gedächtnis zu verankern. Die Romane aus der Weimarer Zeit erweisen sich dabei als bemerkenswerte Zeugnisse aktueller parteipolitischer und ideologischer Auseinandersetzungen, die über unterschiedliche Interpretationen der jüngsten Vergangenheit ausgetragen werden, während die nach 1933 entstandenen Texte vornehmlich gegen das fortschreitende Vergessen der für die deutsche Geschichte ungemein folgenreichen Revolutionsereignisse anschreiben. Content: What does higher education offer to make students competent actors in the world of work and other life spheres? This issue is most controversially debated in economically advanced countries since about four decades when higher education in economically advanced countries began to serve larger ranges of the occupational pyramid than merely the intellectually and professionally chosen few. The author of this volume analyzes a broad range of issues over four decades of his academic career. Employers' and graduate surveys, secondary analyses of education and employment statistics as well as analyses of policy and academic debates form the basis of the key argument: Neither trust in expectations formulated by employers or in income and status as measures of successful study nor isolated claims for the pursuit of academic knowledge for its own sake and for the critical functions of higher education are a suitable reference frame for understanding the dynamic links between higher education and the world of work. A "match" between the number of graduates and the corresponding positions or between the competences acquired during study and job requirements cannot be expected. Students are more ambitious and strive for a broader range of goals than they can expect to be rewarded. Graduates have to be both highly qualified experts and sceptics as far as conventional wisdom is concerned, and they have to be prepared for indeterminate tasks. Key themes of this collection of essays are: the causes and consequences of an imperfect "match" between higher education and employment; the tensions between "employment" and "work" orientation in higher education; opportunities of a "highly educated society"; the dynamics of the variety of students, the patterns of the higher education system and the horizontal and vertical diversity of careers; different notions of higher education and the world of work among economically advanced countries; major controversial notions of professional relevance of study in policy and research debates.
