Content: The “Filière Bilingue” (FiBi) is a public school based on two-way immersion education in French and German. This longitudinal study evaluates correlations of K-4 FiBi learners’ development of their ability to use the partner language communicatively and the linguistic biographies of learners as well as with those of their parents. This study suggests that the impact of linguistic biographies is more important for French-speaking learners than for their German-speaking peers. Possible explanations of these differences might refer to the diglossic situation in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. We also detect significant differences regarding the motivations of parents for registering their child in the FiBi, in particular in terms of employability perspectives in adulthood.
