Die gegenwärtig stattfindenden tief greifenden Umwälzungen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft verlangen nach einem innovativen Organisations- und Führungskonzept. Es muss sowohl die Anpassungsfähigkeit von Unternehmen an ihre komplexe dynamische Umwelt sicherstellen als auch ihre Fähigkeit, aktiv auf die Umwelt einzuwirken. Darüber hinaus soll es eine Antwort geben auf die gesteigerten Bedürfnisse der Mitarbeiter nach Entfaltung ihrer Persönlichkeit, nach vermehrter Teilnahme an unternehmerischen Entscheidungsprozessen sowie nach stärkerer Verantwortung. Andreas Dietrich sieht die Lösung im Konzept der Selbstorganisation. Zu ihrer Umsetzung in sozialen Systemen wird ein Ausbau von Organisationen zu dynamischen Kernkompetenzen vorgeschlagen. Als Fundamente gelten organisationales Lernen und Wissensmanagement, das Gruppenkonzept sowie die Unternehmenskultur. Der Autor erbringt den theoretischen Nachweis, dass Selbstorganisation in Unternehmen realisierbar ist, nennt jedoch auch zahlreiche Hindernisse, die ihrer Verwirklichung entgegenstehen können.
