    Umfang: 1 Online-Ressource (XII, 204 Seiten) : , Illustrationen.
    ISBN: 978-3-318-00264-5
    Serie: Chemical immunology Vol. 70
Inhalt: Intracellular prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms cause some of the most intractable problems in the fields of human and animal infectious diseases. Such infections are characteristically long and chronic and accompanied by deleterious immunopathological changes. The nine chapters in this volume, all written by internationally acknowledged experts in their fields, explore the immunological features common to representative intracellular organisms and also the special features whereby particular species evade immune attack and how they are destroyed with special reference to experimental and human listeriosis, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, toxoplasmosis, African and American trypanosomiasis, malaria, cryptosporidiosis and the cattle disease theileriosis. The emphasis is on the roles of lymphocytes, macrophages, NK cells, cytokines and the contrasting roles of Th1/Th2 cells in protective and counter-protective immune responses. The importance of understanding these phenomena for the development of vaccines, for strategies for ameliorating immunopathological responses and for explaining why some infections are important concomitants in AIDS while others are not is stressed. This volume brings together and establishes links between diverse studies concerning the immunological aspects of the host-parasite relationship otherwise scattered throughout the literature. Authoritative and up-to-date, it will be of particular interest to anyone working or teaching in the fields of immunology, parasitology, microbiology and infectious diseases

Inhalt: What part has religion played in the history of child-rearing? How do we persuade children to behave rationally and how should we exercise adult authority? What use do we make of their innocence and how do we cope with their sexuality? Has history left us with ideas about the child which make no sense in the prevailing conditions of the late twentieth century? In Shaping Childhood these questions are explored through themes from the history of childhood. The myth of the repressive Puritan parent is explored by looking at Puritan ideals of child-rearing. Treating the child as if it

Serie: Regional perspectives on World development report 1995,
    Originaltitel: World development report.
Inhalt: Over the past decade, most countries in the Latin America and Caribbean Region have stabilized their economies and lowered barriers to international trade. Many of the policies aimed at reducing poverty and tackling inequality in the 1960-1980 period were well intentioned, but the region made little or no progress in improving income distribution. With the recent shift toward market orientation and openness to international trade, these countries will need a new approach to labor policy as well as different instruments for addressing income distribution goals. This report gives special attention to four areas of labor policy: 1) change from direct government intervention in wage determination and strict seniority rules to a system that rewards effort, high productivity, and good management within a framework that relies on voluntary negotiation of working conditions between workers and firms; 2) replacement of job security legislation by a more effective mechanism that protects workers when they change jobs; 3) careful design of mandatory contributions to social security and other programs in order to minimize the distortionary effect of labor taxes; and 4) redirecting of government subsidies for training and education to the demand side and targeting to those who cannot afford to pay.
