    Content: Jim Jarmusch gilt als einer der interessantesten Filmemacher des US-Independent-Kinos. Er hat vor allem in Europa, auch in Deutschland, eine treue Fangemeinde. Seine Filme sind geprägt von tiefer Menschlichkeit und einer gewissen Ungläubigkeit dem American Way of Life gegenüber. Sein Kino ist gemacht für Enthusiasten und Liebhaber des Besonderen. "Down by law" zählt zu seinen Frühwerken und erzählt die Geschichte eines Zuhälters und eines Discjockeys, die zu einem warmherzigen Italiener in eine Haftzelle gesperrt werden. Die drei können aus dem Gefängnis fliehen, lernen sich näher kennen und überwinden dabei ihre gegenseitigen Ressentiments. Entstanden ist dabei eine märchenhafte Tragikomödie mit außergewöhnlicher Darstellerführung und Inszenierung. Ein moderner Klassiker auch für kleinere Bestände.
