Der Bonner Ethnologieprofessor hat bereits bei Beck über "Die Maya" (BA 4/96) publiziert. Hier breitet er das gesamte gesicherte und zum Teil auch das spekulative Wissen um die peruanische Urwaldstadt aus, wobei im Mittelpunkt aber die Beschreibung und die Funktionen der einzelnen Bauwerke und der Stadt selbst stehen. Ausgehend von der Entdeckung Machu Picchus im Jahr 1911 durch Hiram Bingham beschreibt er aber auch rückblickend die Geschichte der Eroberung Südamerikas und die Struktur des Inka-Reichs sowie die Bedeutung der Indigena-Bewegung für den heutigen, krisengeschüttelten Staat Peru. Die Allgemeinverständlichkeit und die reihentypische Gestaltung ohne Illustrationen deutet auf die Zielgruppen Schüler und intensiver Interessierte hin. Kann Simone Waisbards Buch zum Thema bei Pawlak und Lübbe (zuletzt BA 4/93) nicht ersetzen, obwohl dessen spätere Ausgaben auch dürftig illustriert waren.
