Series Statement: Circular Economy and Sustainability
Content: This open access book offers a comprehensive exploration of the digital innovations that have emerged in recent years for the circular built environment. Each chapter is meticulously crafted to ensure that both academic readers and industry practitioners can grasp the inner workings of each digital technology, understand its relevance to the circular built environment, examine real-life implementations, and appreciate the intriguing business models behind them. Our primary objective is to blend scholarly knowledge with practical inspiration by providing real-life case studies for each innovation. The authors, who possess extensive expertise in their respective fields, have contributed chapters dedicated to digital technologies within their areas of specialization. The book is organized into three distinct parts. The first part focuses on data-driven digital technologies and delves into how their capabilities can facilitate the transition to a circular built environment. Essential aspects such as building information modeling (BIM), digital twins, geographical information systems (GIS), scanning technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), data templates, and material passports are explored as vital tools for data collection, integration, and analysis in the context of circular construction. In the second part, various digital technologies for design and fabrication are introduced. Topics covered include computational design algorithms, additive and subtractive manufacturing, robotic manufacturing, and extended reality. These discussions shed light on how these technologies can be leveraged to enhance design and fabrication processes within the circular built environment. Finally, the last part of the book presents emerging digital concepts related to business and governance. It explores the role of deconstruction and reverse logistics, blockchain technology, digital building logbooks, and innovative business models as enablers of circularity inthe built environment. The book concludes with a chapter dedicated to digital transformation and its potential to propel the built environment towards a regenerative future. In addition to the substantive content, the book features forewords and perspectives from esteemed experts, providing valuable economic and creative insights to complement its comprehensive approach

Content: This book was born from a meeting in the city of Barranquilla (Colombia), on the occasion of the event of the American University Corporation (CIID) in 2016. It was an effervescent moment where each of the researchers present there reflected the open wound of Latin America. Through a conversation with the editors of the Corporación Universitaria Americana, the idea emerged to produce a theoretical material where the contemporary realities of various Latin American countries and their struggles to try to continue breathing an unhealthy atmosphere where profound political, social, economic and ideological transformations contaminated our countries

Content: In facing homelessness we face the other, and in facing the other, we face ourselves. This book contributes to an emerging body of knowledge on street homelessness in the South African context. It is meant for researchers and scholars who are committed to finding solutions for street homelessness. It offers conceptual frameworks and practical guidelines for a liberative and transformative response to homelessness. It brings together authors from a wide range of disciplines, fusing the rigour of researchers, the vision of activists and the lived experience of practitioners. In this volume, the causes of street homelessness in South Africa today, and its different faces, are traced. It critiques singular solutions, and interrogates the political, institutional and moral failures that contribute to the systemic exclusion of homeless persons and other vulnerable populations from society. It proposes rights-based interventions as part of a radical re-imagination of how street homelessness can be ended, one person and one neighbourhood at a time. The analysis by the authors steer in the direction of new ways of doing and being that could demonstrate concrete, viable and sustainable alternatives to the exclusionary realities faced by homeless persons. It argues for solution-based approaches, aimed at radical forms of social inclusion and achieved through broad-based and creative collaborations by all spheres of society. In the face and presence of street homelessness - as one expression of urban vulnerability and deep socio-economic inequality - society is confronted with a clear political, institutional, moral and personal obligation. This volume calls for a reclamation of community in its most inclusionary, life-affirming and interdependent sense, asserting that we truly are well because of others, and we are unwell if others are. It is a call to reclaim our common humanity in the context of inclusive communities where all are equally welcome and bestowed with dignity and honour

Content: This book was born from the development of the discipline Pedagogical Implications of Historical-Cultural Theory and Early Childhood Education of the Graduate Program in Education at Unesp, Campus de Marília, SP. It presents some reflections on aspects of human development in early childhood, considering the experiences lived by children since their birth that shape their personality and intelligence – which has been more recently proven by neuroscience. It reveals some ways to better promote human development in childhood, which involve a new way of organizing space - with a variety of materials: from books to natural materials that can be used in multiple ways by children, that are accessible to their hands, that are organized in a perceptible way with children, that present culture in its most elaborate forms (VYGOTSKY, 2018) without underestimating the possibility of children educating their sensitivity either for science or for art. A new school culture also involves new forms of organization and time management that allow children free time to choose activities, times of diversified activity in which there is the possibility of choosing between some activities proposed by the teacher, in addition to activities presented by the teacher with the purpose of expanding what children already know. These new forms of organization and time management respect children's times, considering that they are different from adults' times. For this reason, the forms of anticipation of schooling and the abbreviation of childhood that have been imposed on Early Childhood Education schools with the approval of many families do not fit. This new school culture also involves new forms of relationship between adults and children, it requires deepening the reception and listening to the desires, interests and needs of children as a method of teaching work: horizontal relationships that guarantee the participation of children and cooperation between adults and children in the organization of life at school; communication relationships between adults and children in accessing knowledge, culture. And all this will lead to a new quality of the activities proposed and carried out at school – in the sense that the Historical-Cultural Theory gives to the term activity: involving the child with the body, thought and emotion in the situations experienced. This set of reflections guides the thinking and acting of teachers towards respect for times and the ways babies and children live their adventure of knowing the world and expanding their experiences to contemplate human development for all children in their maximum possibilities. The historical-cultural approach supports us for this, we must venture to make this school a fact
