Content: The Javanese Collection features documents, all of them in English, covering a variety of cultural and socioeconomic information. Most of the documents deal with the post 1949 period in which the Javanese, as citizens of the newly founded Indonesian Republic, witnessed political violence and rapid economic transformation. The place focus is central Java where a group of scholars, sponsored by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, conducted ethnographic research in early 1950s. The outputs of this study included the works of the scholarly couple Hildred and Clifford Geertz, and several other researchers. Major themes covered include kinship and family system, religion and culture change, social organization and village life, marketing behavior of peasants. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive account of Javanese culture and society as observed in the 1950s-1970s. These earlier studies are supplemented by other documents in the collection which, based on information from 1980s to mid-2000s, examine more specific themes. Coverage includes family life, aspects of culture including concepts of self, shame, place, gender and power. Other documents in the collection include broad ethnographic descriptions of Javanese culture by an Indonesian anthropologist

    Edition: 1st ed. 2010.
    ISBN: 1-59745-019-7
Series Statement: Methods in Molecular Biology, 633
Content: Cultured cells have combined accessibility and the ability to expand a homogeneous cell population from a relatively limited source, thus opening up a wealth of possibilities for researchers. In Mouse Cell Culture: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers provide a number of methods for the culture of a wide range of specific cells and tissues isolated from the key genetic model of the fetal or adult mouse. Including protocols for the explant of fetal tissues and stem cells that allow developmental processes to be followed ex vivo as well as protocols for the culture of isolated cell types that allow for the study of relatively homogeneous cell populations, this volume brings together a selection of the most current methods in order to make them available in one convenient source. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Practical and authoritative, Mouse Cell Culture: Methods and Protocols serves as an immediately applicable springboard for the development of new tissue culture methods in order to advance the study and treatment of human disorders.

Content: A biography of an important but largely forgotten nineteenth-century scientist whose work helped lay the foundation of modern neuroscience.Emil du Bois-Reymond is the most important forgotten intellectual of the nineteenth century. In his own time (1818-1896) du Bois-Reymond grew famous in his native Germany and beyond for his groundbreaking research in neuroscience and his provocative addresses on politics and culture. This biography by Gabriel Finkelstein draws on personal papers, published writings, and contemporary responses to tell the story of a major scientific figure. Du Bois-Reymond's discovery of the electrical transmission of nerve signals, his innovations in laboratory instrumentation, and his reductionist methodology all helped lay the foundations of modern neuroscience. In addition to describing the pioneering experiments that earned du Bois-Reymond a seat in the Prussian Academy of Sciences and a professorship at the University of Berlin, Finkelstein recounts du Bois-Reymond's family origins, private life, public service, and lasting influence. Du Bois-Reymond's public lectures made him a celebrity. In talks that touched on science, philosophy, history, and literature, he introduced Darwin to German students (triggering two days of debate in the Prussian parliament); asked, on the eve of the Franco-Prussian War, whether France had forfeited its right to exist; and proclaimed the mystery of consciousness, heralding the age of doubt. The first modern biography of du Bois-Reymond in any language, this book recovers an important chapter in the history of science, the history of ideas, and the history of Germany.
