Das jüdisch-polnische Kind Stefan Jerzy Zweig war vier Jahre alt, als das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald von amerikanischen Truppen befreit wurde. In der DDR wurde seine Überlebensgeschichte, vor allem durch Bruno Apitz' Roman "Nackt unter Wölfen" und dessen Verfilmung bekannt. Der Historiker Bill Niven liefert mit seinem Buch eine kritische Betrachtung des Mythos Buchenwald und der Vereinnahmung Stefan Jerzy Zweigs in der DDR-Propaganda.- Indem er die tatsächlichen Ereignisse durch sorgfältiges Abwägen verschiedener Zeitzeugenberichte rekonstruiert und der Fiktion aus Literatur, Film und Propaganda gegenüber stellt, gelingt es ihm, den antifaschistischen Mythos zu dekonstruieren und gleichzeitig einen kritischen Blick auf die Rezeption der Geschehnisse in der gesamtdeutschen Gegenwart zu werfen.
