Cournot and the social income / Robert M. Solow -- 7. Comparing the incomparable : the sociology of statistics / Alain Desrosières , From his earliest publications, Cournot broke from tradition with his predecessors in applying mathematical modelling to the social sphere. Consequently, he was the first to affirm the mathematization of social phenomena as an essential principle. The fecundity of Cournot's works stems not only from this departure, but also from a richness that irrigated the social sciences of the twentieth century. In this collection, the contributors - including two Nobel laureates in economics - highlight Cournot's profound innovativeness and continued relevance in the areas of industrial economics, mathematical economics, market competition, game theory and epistemology of probability and statistics. Each of the seven authors reminds us of the force and modernity of Cournot's thought as a mathematician, historian of the sciences, philosopher and, not least, as an economist

Series Statement: Methods in Molecular Biology, 567
Content: Over the past twenty years, the development of chromatin immunoprecipitation, or ChIP, assays has immensely enhanced the biological significance of the multifaceted DNA-binding proteins. In Chromatin Immunoprecipitation Assays: Methods and Protocols, researchers deeply involved in the development and improvement of the field provide cutting-edge protocols devoted to the most recent progress in ChIP and related subjects. The thorough chapters involve topics such as the characterization of ChIP antibodies, ChIP methods for small cell numbers, fast ChIP protocols, assays adapted to various species and cell types, as well as several strategies for the analysis of genome-wide datasets, while also extending a bit beyond ChIP assays to cover immunoprecipitation-based DNA methylation analyses, determination of spatial chromatin organization of large genomic regions, and RNA immunoprecipitation. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters contain brief introductions to their respective subjects, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easy-to-use, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation Assays: Methods and Protocols is a timely guide for all those who wish to further the development of this powerful tool and continue delving into the incredible complexity of the cell’s biology.

Content: Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols presents a selection of current capillary electrophoresis methods used to separate representative types of molecules and particles and in combination with different detection techniques. The volume is intended for beginners in the field and provides overviews of each technique and a starting point for the exploration of the defined literature on the different application topics. As a beginning text, each technique is explained in simple terms, assuming only minimal previous knowledge of the methods. A Notes section accompanies each chapter and addresses problems that may occur and how to overcome them. In Part I, Analyte-Oriented, contributors present methods and protocols based on sample type and size for inorganic and organic small ions, anionic, cationic, and neutral pollutants and pharmaceuticals, sugars, amino acids, nucleotides and DNA, and synthetic copolymers up to microorganisms. In Part II, Methods-Oriented, authors present the more methodological descriptions of particular and new CE techniques including CZE, MEKC/MECC, CEC, affinity CE, coating and online concentration techniques, single-cell analysis, and multidimensional techniques. Comprehensive and timely, Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols is ideal for researchers looking for a beginning text on capillary electrophoresis methods.

Series Statement: North American Kant Society studies in philosophy ; vol. 8
Content: A collection of essays investigating key historical and scientific questions relating to the concept of natural purpose in Kant's philosophy of biology. Understanding Purpose is an exploration of the central concept of natural purpose [Naturzweck] in Kant's philosophy of biology. Kant's work in this area is marked by a strong teleological concern: living organisms, in his view, are qualitatively different from mechanistic devices, and as a result they cannot be understood by means of the same principles. At the same time, Kant's own use of the concept of purpose does not presuppose any theological commitments, and is merely "regulative"; that is, it is employed as a heuristic device. The contributors to this volume also investigate the following key historical questions relating to Kant's philosophy of biology: How does it relate to European work in the life sciences that was done before Kant arrived on the scene? How did Kant's unique approach to the philosophy of biology in turn influence later work in this area? The issues explored in this volume are as pertinent to the history of philosophy as they are to the history of science -- it is precisely the blurred boundaries between these two disciplines that allows for new perspectives on Kantianism and early nineteenth-century German biology to emerge. Contributors: Jean-Claude Dupont, Mark Fisher, Philippe Huneman, Robert J. Richards, Phillip R. Sloan, Stéphane Schmitt, and John Zammito. Philippe Huneman is researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Unit of the Université Paris.
