Content: TON-W "Bamanan" ist das Debütalbum Rokia Konés, einer der beliebtesten Sängerinnen Malis, und eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem in Irland geborenen und in Kalifornien lebenden Rockproduzenten Jacknife Lee. Rokia Koné, die in ihrem Heimatland bereits ein großer Star ist, wurde erstmals 2017 als Teil der gefeierten feministischen Supergruppe Les Amazones d'Afrique einem internationalen Publikum vorgestellt, als sie neben einigen der größten weiblichen Künstlerinnen Westafrikas auftrat. Jacknife Lee ist Produzent der weltweit bekannten Bands U2, R.E.M und The Killers und hat für seine Arbeit an Taylor Swifts millionenfach verkauftem Red eine Grammy-Auszeichnung erhalten. Klanglandschaften in Stadiongröße sind seine Spezialität, doch auf "Bamanan" bildet die schroffe Schönheit von Rokias Stimme mit Subtilität und Sensibilität den Höhepunkt. Jede Nuance und jeder Atemzug ist zu hören, jeder Tonfall und jede melismatische Improvisation wird sorgfältig bewahrt. Dies wird am besten durch die atemberaubende neue Single „N’yanyan“ veranschaulicht. Die Vocals für „N’yanyan“ wurden am 18. August 2020 in Bamako aufgenommen, der Nacht eines Staatsstreichs, der eine weitere Phase der Instabilität für Mali markierte, ein Land, das fast ein Jahrzehnt lang von schweren politischen Umwälzungen geplagt wurde. Inspiriert von den turbulenten Ereignissen um sie herum lieferte Rokia eine tiefgründige Gesangsdarbietung in einem einzigen Take ab, kurz bevor der Strom abgeschaltet und eine Ausgangssperre über die Stadt verhängt wurde. Passenderweise ist es ein Lied mit einem existentialistischen Thema über die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und die Dinge, die nicht erklärt werden können, und ermutigen uns, sie zu akzeptieren und mutig anzunehmen. Im Kern ist "Bamanan" eine Hommage an die Bambara im Süden Malis, an ihre Sprache, Kultur und ihre Bräuche.
