Der englische Autor (u.a. "Buddhismus") beschreibt in seinem Kindersachbuch das antike Rom. Zwar geht er auf die Geschichte des Römischen Reiches ein, aber sein Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Alltagsleben. So behandelt er die Wohnverhältnisse, die Freizeitvergnügen (Wagenrennen, Gladiatorenkämpfe) und das Familienleben. Neben knappen Übersichtstexten bietet er längere, z.B. über das Leben einer Sklavin oder den Alltag eines 9-Jährigen. Zudem geht er auf die römischen Gottheiten und technische Errungenschaften wie Aquädukte und den Strassenbau ein. Doch auch militärische Aspekte wie das Heerwesen werden behandelt. Insgesamt orientiert sich der Band inhaltlich stark an den Interessen von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Die meist kurzen Texte und das Glossar sind gut verständlich. Die üppigen Illustrationen (eine gelungene Mischung aus Fotos und Zeichnungen) veranschaulichen die Texte. Der Band ragt deutlich aus der Fülle von Kindersachbüchern zum Thema heraus und kann etwa neben "Die Römer" oder dem "Forscherhandbuch Altes Rom" breit empfohlen werden.
