    Content: "The Forty-First Yearbook follows the plan of presentation of many previous yearbooks of the Society in the respect that it consists of two parts printed as separate volumes. It is unique in the sense that the two parts were from the beginning planned as companion volumes designed as scholarly expositions of the concepts of different schools of thought with respect to two fundamental issues in educational theory and practice. These issues pertain to the ultimate purposes of education in a democratic society and the nature of the learning process. The projected aims of a social enterprise, even though they may be defined in terms of scientific knowledge, are the expression of a choice of alternatives. The final determination of such aims is the motive of philosophy. The effective methods to be employed in realizing selected objectives may most assuredly be disclosed through laboratory and other experimental techniques. Thus, in education, the issues involved in the determination of what knowledge is to be acquired are resolved by reference to the philosophical concepts with which the purposes and results of schooling are to be reconciled, while the methods by which this knowledge may be attained are to be sought in those refinements of experience achieved by the science of psychology in the testing of different theories of human learning"--Preface.     Content: "The main purpose of this book is to tell America what scientific investigation of morale has thus far demonstrated. The research is still, of course, unfinished. It is hoped that this book may itself stimulate more and better studies of morale. But we cannot wait until the facts are all in. Research has a frontier but no final boundary. Here then, is an interim report on what psychologists now think about morale problems. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the declarations of war came after most of the chapters had been prepared. Publication was necessarily delayed while manuscripts were revised to fit the wartime situation. It is a tribute to the foresight of this group of social scientists, however, that no changes in position or argument were required. Revisions consisted only of changes in phraseology and occasional illustrations. The book appears as the second yearbook of the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues. This Society is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association, with two main purposes. One is to turn the attention of psychological research toward the urgent problems of our present social, economic, and political life.     Content: "Much of the field of elementary or descriptive statistics has been pretty well organized, so that the general route of progress for the beginner can be mapped out with little difficulty. Yet this route, plainly marked as it is, may be traversed with such facile mathematical skill--and nothing else--as to cause the novice to lose some of the most valuable lessons in simple critical analysis which statistics can teach. There is a peculiar logic associated with the study of statistics. Some call it common sense; others prefer a more exact characterization. In any case, it is difficult to dissociate the purely mathematical aspects from those which are not exactly mathematical but which do require a good brand of clear thinking. It is hoped that this book, dealing as it does with the elementary phases of statistics, will develop on the part of the reader an appropriate attitude of critical reasonableness toward the subject. There is no reason why sound mathematical conclusions should not be accompanied by a healthy appreciation of what such conclusions do not assert. The arrangement of material allows much flexibility in the choice of topics. Many sections and some chapters may be eliminated, if so desired, without affecting the continuity of the book. These are marked with an asterisk (*) in the Table of Contents. Proofs are generally included, but may be omitted if the occasion warrants. In particular, the writer has aimed to describe the full purport of each distinctive mathematical concept.
