Content: "The Forty-First Yearbook follows the plan of presentation of many previous yearbooks of the Society in the respect that it consists of two parts printed as separate volumes. It is unique in the sense that the two parts were from the beginning planned as companion volumes designed as scholarly expositions of the concepts of different schools of thought with respect to two fundamental issues in educational theory and practice. These issues pertain to the ultimate purposes of education in a democratic society and the nature of the learning process. The projected aims of a social enterprise, even though they may be defined in terms of scientific knowledge, are the expression of a choice of alternatives. The final determination of such aims is the motive of philosophy. The effective methods to be employed in realizing selected objectives may most assuredly be disclosed through laboratory and other experimental techniques. Thus, in education, the issues involved in the determination of what knowledge is to be acquired are resolved by reference to the philosophical concepts with which the purposes and results of schooling are to be reconciled, while the methods by which this knowledge may be attained are to be sought in those refinements of experience achieved by the science of psychology in the testing of different theories of human learning"--Preface. Series Statement: Study of adolescents / Progressive Education Association publications. Commission on Secondary School Curriculum
Content: "The Study of Adolescents was set up within the Commission on Secondary School Curriculum of the Progressive Education Association in 1934 and concluded in 1939. Its task has been to gain increased understanding of young people for the purposes of education. The findings of the Study have been made available to educators through three main channels. Its methods, observations, and recommendations have been reported in publications by members of the Study staff. The present volume is the first book prepared for the Commission that is devoted wholly to the observations of the Study and the only one that attempts to discuss these in the full scope of their implications for secondary education"--Preface. Content: "This book is a response to the desire of teachers for a text which will present a more comprehensive treatment of behavioral measurement techniques and procedures than is available in any single volume hitherto published. It has been planned to serve the needs of those students in the second, third, and fourth years of college who are preparing for work in medicine, journalism, education, industrial relations, social work, or applied psychology-students who, as a rule, cannot take time to read many original sources, even when they are available. The book is arranged in three parts. All of Part I, which deals with basic considerations in measurement, must be understood by those who wish to study the rest of the book. Most of the chapters in Part II , which deals with typical measuring instruments and their uses, and in Part III, which deals with persistent problems in measurement, may be read separately without serious loss of context. In a short course, such chapters should be selected as seem best adapted to satisfy the interests and needs of the particular students enrolled"--Preface. Content: "The main purpose of this book is to tell America what scientific investigation of morale has thus far demonstrated. The research is still, of course, unfinished. It is hoped that this book may itself stimulate more and better studies of morale. But we cannot wait until the facts are all in. Research has a frontier but no final boundary. Here then, is an interim report on what psychologists now think about morale problems. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the declarations of war came after most of the chapters had been prepared. Publication was necessarily delayed while manuscripts were revised to fit the wartime situation. It is a tribute to the foresight of this group of social scientists, however, that no changes in position or argument were required. Revisions consisted only of changes in phraseology and occasional illustrations. The book appears as the second yearbook of the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues. This Society is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association, with two main purposes. One is to turn the attention of psychological research toward the urgent problems of our present social, economic, and political life. The other is to make available to citizens, and especially to officials in a position to determine policy, the conclusions which can be drawn from scientific study of human behavior"--Preface. Content: "Most psychologists agree that an experimental approach has great value in the introductory course in psychology. Participation in experiments gives the beginning student a vivid impression of the phenomena with which psychology deals, and leads him to an appreciation of the techniques upon which the science bases its conclusions. More courses in psychology would no doubt be built around an experimental core, were it not for the technical difficulties that such an approach usually involves. Experiments and Demonstrations in Psychology provides a means by which the introductory course may be enriched without undue demands upon time or equipment. The material, consisting of a Student's Manual and an Instructor's Manual, is is divided into units that follow the order of the chapters of Psychology, by Shaffer, Gilmer, and Schoen. The value of these manuals, however, is not confined to use with this text. The material is appropriate for use with any standard text in general psychology. This Instructor's Manual supplements the Student's Manual by providing additional information and material that may prove helpful in administering the course. An estimate is provided of the minimum time required for each experiment or demonstration. The materials are designated specifically, with notations concerning substitute arrangements to take the place of more elaborate apparatus whenever possible. For many experiments a suggested schedule gives the least time that is needed for each part of the procedure. The comments offer suggestions concerning material and methods, and state the procedures intended when these are not described fully in the Student's Manual. The authors have tried to err by saying too much rather than too little, since familiar material is easily skipped over, while full accounts are helpful when a particular experiment may be relatively unfamiliar. All instructors will modify the experiments in some degree, as dictated by their individual experiences"--PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)

Series Statement: The Dryden Press handbooks
Content: "The purpose of this volume is twofold. First, the subject matter of general psychology has been summarized for the convenience of the general reader who wishes to understand the behavior of the normal adult individual. This handbook provides for any reader an introduction to the aims, methods, and principles of psychology, which as a science investigates not only what man does but also what he experiences in everyday life. Second, the book has been arranged to serve as a guide for the college student who studies psychology for the first time. The effort has been made to set forth the specific aims, methods, facts, and explanations pertinent to the needs of the beginning student. It has been the purpose of the authors to summarize, without the inclusion of numerous details, the basic facts and principles which describe and explain human behavior. To do this the most significant and essential materials in general psychology have been highlighted. The student can profitably read any chapter in the volume in conjunction with the corresponding chapter in the standard texts used today in colleges and universities. The book should also be useful to those teachers of introductory psychology who do not wish to adhere to a specific and detailed text but prefer to develop their course in connection with selected references"--Preface. Content: "Much of the field of elementary or descriptive statistics has been pretty well organized, so that the general route of progress for the beginner can be mapped out with little difficulty. Yet this route, plainly marked as it is, may be traversed with such facile mathematical skill--and nothing else--as to cause the novice to lose some of the most valuable lessons in simple critical analysis which statistics can teach. There is a peculiar logic associated with the study of statistics. Some call it common sense; others prefer a more exact characterization. In any case, it is difficult to dissociate the purely mathematical aspects from those which are not exactly mathematical but which do require a good brand of clear thinking. It is hoped that this book, dealing as it does with the elementary phases of statistics, will develop on the part of the reader an appropriate attitude of critical reasonableness toward the subject. There is no reason why sound mathematical conclusions should not be accompanied by a healthy appreciation of what such conclusions do not assert. The arrangement of material allows much flexibility in the choice of topics. Many sections and some chapters may be eliminated, if so desired, without affecting the continuity of the book. These are marked with an asterisk (*) in the Table of Contents. Proofs are generally included, but may be omitted if the occasion warrants. In particular, the writer has aimed to describe the full purport of each distinctive mathematical concept. Other features which seem worthy of special mention are the use of graph paper of various sorts (for example, logarithmic and probability papers), the early introduction of the notion of probability, brief discussions of limitations in procedures and results, the recurrent use of graphical methods, and the later chapters leading to an introduction to sampling theory"--Preface.
