    Series Statement: Global Economic Prospects
Content: Developing countries are now recovering from the worst ravages of the financial crisis of 1997-98. However, the recovery is both uneven and fragile, and many countries continue to struggle in the aftermath. In addition to a review of international economic developments, this report considers three areas where the crisis has had a major impact on growth and welfare in the developing world. First, the crisis has increased poverty in the East Asian crisis countries, Brazil, and the Russian Federation, and elsewhere. Chapter 2 reviews the evidence on the crisis' social impact on East Asia and other developing countries, and addresses the broader issue of the impact of external shocks on poverty in developing countries. Second, though the East Asian crisis countries are experiencing a strong cyclical recovery, severe structural problems remain. Chapter 3 outlines the depth of the problems faced by the corporate and financial sectors of these economies, analyzes the challenges facing the restructuring process, and discusses the appropriate role of government in supporting restructuring and reducing systemic risk. Third, exchange rate depreciations and declines in demand in East Asia exacerbated the fall in primary commodity prices that began in 1996. Chapter 4 examines how the most commodity-dependent economies in the world--the major oil exporting countries and the non-oil exporters of Sub-Saharan Africa--have adjusted to the commodity price cycle.

Series Statement: Community, environment and disaster risk management, v. 6
Content: One of the emerging reasons for the current trend of increasing impacts of disasters is the unpredictability of natural hazard events coupled with the tendency of human settlements to move to vulnerable locations including coastal areas in search of economic gains. Urban areas are most affected due to concentration of habitat and resources. Whilst it is impossible to make resistant urban growth, resilience is becoming more widely accepted and urban systems must be resilient enough to cope with the climate related hazards. This book highlights the issues of resilience through regional, national, city and community-based studies. Contributions come from academia, city government networks, city managers, non-government organizations and international agencies like the World Bank and United Nations. Thus, the book reflects a unique aspect of multi-stakeholder perspective. It also highlights how to enhance actions at local levels, and how the plans can be implemented through multi-stakeholder collaboration. This is the first book to combine academic research and field practice on the urban risk reduction, especially focusing on the climate-related disasters in the Asian region.

Content: Water is the key to human civilization. Most of the ancient civilization had its roots to river basins, where people-water interaction was the key aspect. Due to innovations of knowledge and technology and modernization of lifestyles, the human-water direct contact has become less significant. People have become more dependent to the system, and consequently, the closeness to water is gradually diminishing. It is however, a challenge on how to learn from the basic principles of water human interaction and apply those lessons to the current context of urban and rural settings. This book will provide a few analytical case studies on different aspects of water communities, which is defined as the human-water interaction process.

Content: Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) are closely associated. After the Bali Conference of Parties (COP) 2007, there has been significant awareness in global and national level to make collective focus on CCA and DRR. There exists some literature on CCA, however, the linkages with the DRR is not clear. The Nairobi Work Program (NWP), facilitated by the UNFCCC (UN Framework of Convention on Climate change) and the Parties have found specific scope of actions to enhance the CCA and DRR agenda in developing countries. Different national and international agencies have started undertaking initiatives on this aspect but very few concrete measures have been implemented. At this onset, the book provides 19 case studies from 13 countries and regions in Asia. The case studies highlight different aspects of CCA-DRR entry points, like policy interventions, drought risk management, coastal management, agro-forestry, lagoon management, livelihood issues and risk communication. This book is a complimentary volume of Volume 4: Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction: Issues and Challenges, which focuses on the theory of CCA and DRR and its enabling environment, CCA-DRR linkages framework of governance, education and technology, different entry points like urban, coast, forest, river, and housing; and finally provided a regional perspective of developing countries. The primary targets of this book are the students and researchers in the field of disaster risk reduction, climate change, environmental studies and related risks. The book will help them to have a better idea on the current trend of research in the field, and will provide basic knowledge on this important topic. The other target group is practitioners and policy makers for applying the collective knowledge into policy and decision making.
