Die Fernsehmoderatorin und Autorin Bärbel Schäfer, geboren 1963 (zuletzt "Ist da oben jemand?", ID-A 17/16), traf sich Woche für Woche mit der Eva Szepesi, geboren 1932 in Budapest, einer Überlebenden des Holocaust, die heute in Frankfurt/M. lebt. Nach Jahrzehnten des Schweigens erzählt Szepesi, die 1945 in Auschwitz befreit wurde, zum 1. Mal von dem Erlebten, davon, dass sie ein Leben lang auf ihre Eltern und ihren Bruder gewartet hatte, die in Auschwitz umgebracht wurden. Heute spricht sie vor Schulklassen als Zeitzeugin. Die Gespräche mit Eva sind für Schäfer Anlass, sich auch mit der eigenen Familiengeschichte während der NS-Zeit auseinanderzusetzen, ihrem Vater unbequeme Fragen zu stellen, sich selbst zu hinterfragen. Dabei schweift sie bisweilen etwas ab, schmückt das Buch mit Episoden aus ihrem Leben aus, stellt sich zu sehr in den Mittelpunkt. Dadurch kommt Evas Lebensgeschichte, die mehr Raum verdient hätte, leider zu kurz. Dennoch ein anschaulich geschriebenes Buch.
